By transforming the matrix equation for a system such that the main system matrix is triangular makes the computation of the determinant simple, as the determinant of a triangular matrix is merely the product of the diagonal terms. Furthermore, if none of the diagonal terms are identically zero, the determinant is non-zero, and it then becomes possible to generate transfer functions for all the variables of interest with respect to the output. By equating the determinant to zero, we get the characteristic equation of the system from which the poles of the system can be calculated. In my next book on multivariable analytical techniques in electrical engineering, this process will be used to analyze a number of popular power electronic converters.

Continuing with the next chapter of my next book on analytical techniques for power electronics, I get started with the system representation of a transformer-less single-phase UPS. With this sample power converter, I will describe how we can use concepts from linear algebra to gain insights into the behavior of the circuit in open-loop and also as a controlled system.
