For so many of us in recovery, being “healthy” creates quite a conundrum. Although we commit to health and desire the benefits that come from being healthy, it can be painfully difficult to hear the words: “You look healthy.” In my latest blog I open up about the trouble I had with this word, and how I eventually learned to expand my definition of healthy from one rooted in eating disorder thinking to one that aligns with recovery values. January means… New Year New Me health kicks. Important to remember that for some people ‘healthy’ might not look like what you think it does. At one point in my life, the healthiest choices for me were not exercising at all and eating an extra slice of cake or ordering a takeout pizza because I hadn’t done it since I was a kid and I had spent my life restricting my intake to dangerous levels and going to the gym three times a day every day. It’s wonderful when people want to take positive steps to feeling more comfortable about who they are, however they choose to do that. But January is a tough month for eating disorders sufferers. Diet and exercise routines can be competitive and all-consuming. When someone is on a diet, they actually talk about food a lot more because your brain perceives it to be a period of famine so it’s sending out emergency signals. It’s a well documented side effect of calorie restriction. I have spent many Januarys with headphones in to drown out diet talk because I found it difficult due to my own mental health. Some great tips here from Beat on how to handle this period if you are struggling:

It can seem that everywhere we look there are ads and promotions telling us to feel ashamed of our bodies. So, let’s change the conversation.
