Board President of Clinical Affairs, Institute for Functional Medicine

One of the many reasons I was drawn to Functional Medicine is that it’s the medicine of asking “why?” and looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health. When we use this practice to assess the metabolic diseases we see today, we can see we’re in an energy crisis. We’re wrapped up in a web of physiologic root causes, but also a web of policies, industries, and economic incentives impacting our health from the ground up. I loved discussing all this and more on this episode of the podcast with Dr. Casey Means. In this episode, we discuss: - Why we need to reimagine the healthcare system and how to use Functional Medicine as a framework for asking “why?” - Using metabolic health as a barometer for our challenges as a society - A stark reality: Every institution related to our health makes money off of sickness - Combining advanced technology with our own awareness to take back control of our health - Five affordable biomarkers of metabolic syndrome to start with - And so much more! I hope you’ll tune in to learn how to dramatically improve your metabolic health and support foundational societal shifts, all at once. Casey Means, MD I applaud that you highlighted the importance of slowing down/making time in our lives to hear our body signals, use intuition & body awareness. What are your thoughts on coupling tools and tech too early in this process for the average person in a typical care setting? Reliance on external influence, when we are often disconnected & lacking self-attunement, may disrupt Body-Food Choice Congruence, cause overwhelm, and ultimately jeopardize the longevity of consistent behavior change. When do you see integrating tools/tech is most helpful in the process?

I would agree with most of this except the framework should be based on evidence based lifestyle medicine. Functional medicine has yet to be accepted and due to getting a little ahead of its skis in terms of promise vs delivery of the over and mis-testing that too often occurs. and to be clear this isn’t to say there aren’t GREAT Functional Medicine practitioners out there. But there are multiple examples of common “advanced tech” testing done by FM that has little to no (and sometimes negative) evidence that drives more anxiety than finding true root cause (like IgG testing for suspected food intolerances: https://www.aaaai.org/tools-for-the-public/conditions-library/allergies/igg-food-test), where the tech is advanced, but the findings and thought process around leveraging and explaining the results are not. I’ve had numerous past FM patients come to be with notable anxiety over such testing and it’s quite an onion to unpeel. That said, about the rough, looking forward to focusing in on the diamonds in this podcast! Never through out a baby with the bathwater. we all don’t have to agree on anything to help society move forward on the unequivocal things that we do👍🏽

I don't know about all this talk about medicine. I awoke from a coma severely mentally and physically disabled. I recovered simply by eating natural foods and exercising to the best of my ability, physically and cognitively. With time I grew stronger mentally and physically, It was a journey that took me nearly 20 years, but I am now physically and mentally stronger than I've ever been. All because I didn't touch prescription drugs or in your case functional medicine. I just kept things natural.

No question that functional medicine digs deeper and deeper into root causes of the symptoms that modern medicine treats. I personally love FM and I have learned how read important FM labs for people that help get to the root causes of for example their digestive issues, nutrients deficiencies or inflammation. That being said and from my experience doing it: Most people don't see the value in learning deeply about their body and want immediate results, which is why pain killers, steroids or other pills work " better". INTEGRATIVE approach is needed of both conventional and western medicine. The application of FM can be confusing to the patient and very expensive as it is not covered. Business people are not interested in POSTHUMOUS recognitions which is why working GROUND UP is and will be so hard to implement. Without the explanation of the WHY that doctors don't have time for, it can be very overwhelming for the patient to be compliant even if FM protocols, especially since it requires lifestyle interventions in addition to supplements and sometimes necessary meds. Healthcare definitely needs a makeover! You are doing such a great job in trying to change the status quo.

I loved her perspective on us having "good" and "bad" energy. Meaning metabolic energy! Tools on how to awaken our inner physician, our innate intelligence, our intuition. What an enlightening and inspiring conversation. Thank you to two docs who understand it is all connected and we are solar powered beings. We are a process not an entity. yes!

The best thing about functional health is how deeply it analyses a disease and looks for a solution. This discussion seems so interesting, Mark Hyman, MD🙌
