Nine months later, Prime's price has halved from its initial launch price of R39.99. However, during promotional periods, the savings were minimal, only amounting to R1.91. This price adjustment may indicate that Checkers achieved its intended goals with the initial hype surrounding the product, meeting its projected revenue targets. Alternatively, they may have successfully attracted new, long-term customers who previously overlooked it. The future trajectory of Prime remains uncertain, with outcomes ranging from continued shelf presence to potentially a fate similar to that of Energade. Regardless, Checkers is still the ultimate winner of this story.

While you have to wonder why they would announce this more than 2 years before it will happen (actually, you don't have to wonder - they did it to help boost their popularity now that the Liberals might actually have a leader that people have heard of), there are some things to look for: 1. Apply for a sales position with the beer and wine companies (or the bev-alc sales brokers) in early 2025, as they are going to need to hire more field sales to get the listings and service all those new points of distribution - a lot of these stores are independents. 2. Spirits companies will be worried, as shoppers will be able to satisfy their "alcohol needs" much more conveniently outside the LCBO - there is a reason that spirits are so underdeveloped in Quebec. 3. 7am to 11pm will be the times you can buy beer, wine and RTD - will TBS and LCBO open earlier to compete...no...so, could you see dynamic pricing, where c-stores raise their prices when they have the "selling monopoly" (i.e. 7am to 10am, and 8pm to 11pm). 4. Costco will be the most interesting retail piece - how will they want to offer value to their members in this category?

The ingredients mix might vary in proportion but the retailers may need a leaf from the hospitality playbook in providing a memorable experience for everyone walking through that door. While sourcing today has become less difficult, thanks to the advancement in logistics and supply chain, understanding the customer's taste profile, the unique occasion that drives somebody to walk into a store and make them feel at home will always win in the long run. A small sale today could mean multiple cases and infinite referrals in the future. I personally prefer to buy from businesses that don't judge me for my lack of knowledge in a certain subject matter and would behave the same if I spent a couple of dollars or when feeling indulgent.
