Anheuser-Busch is the first to adopt American Farmland Trust's U.S. Farmed certification. 'Anheuser-Busch is a proud supporter of North Dakota farmers, sourcing 23 percent of its barley from North Dakota across 250 grower partners. Anheuser-Busch has two local agriculture facilities in North Dakota, including Anheuser-Busch Barley Elevator (Sutton) and Anheuser-Busch Barley Elevator (West Fargo) and spends $700M on the highest-quality ingredients from American farmers each year. Consumers in North Dakota are empowered to purchase U.S. Farmed certified products to benefit U.S. farmers and invest in the future of domestic ingredient sourcing, helping to ensure a vibrant and thriving agricultural sector in America for generations to come. As the dust has settled on the closure of Thornloe Cheese by its owners, Gay Lea Foods, the real work can begin. There is a golden opportunity for the communities in Temiskaming to make a strategic investment in technology and infrastructure - areas where Gay Lea fell short. The long-term returns for community employment, sustainable agriculture, and brand value can't be ignored. I see plenty of synergies with organizations in and outside of Northern Ontario, like Northern Ontario Angels, Northern Ontario Exports Program, Destination Northern Ontario, Ontario Centre of Innovation, Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance, Dairy Farmers of Canada | Les Producteurs laitiers du Canada, Dairy Farmers of Ontario, South Temiskaming Community Futures Development Corporation, Table of Impact Investment Practitioners, Fair Finance Fund, FCC / FAC, Restaurants Canada, University of Guelph, Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation / La Fédération canadienne des coopératives de travail and government to work towards a resolution. UPSIDE Foods aims to break ground on a commercial-scale cultivated meat facility in Glenview, Illinois, later this year that will become operational in 2025. Supported by a $140m investment from UPSIDE Foods — which has raised $608m since it was founded in late 2015 — the site will have an initial capacity of millions of pounds of meat and the potential to expand to over 30 million pounds. The new plant in Glenview — dubbed ‘Rubicon’ — will have a range of bioreactors going up to 100,000-liters, says COO Amy Chen. “The design basis for Rubicon when you think about the scale which we’re talking about, the unit economics look attractive. But a lot still has to happen, right? The supply chain has to be built around it, the cells need to be very productive, we need to have the media components and the ecosystem of suppliers to be able to scale not only to the 1,000s of pounds but to tens of millions of pounds, so a lot of the work that’s being done in the background is around building that ecosystem.” AgFunder #cultivatedmeat #foodtech #alternativeproteins

It's unfortunate that the cultivated meat scene in SG is going through a grind. The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a global non-profit that advocates for alternatives to animal products. The GFI supported two studies on production of cultivated meat (CM). The first was a techno-economic analysis (TEA) published in 2021 (https://lnkd.in/gY3FPTqX). While current CM product costs are 100 to 10,000 higher than that for traditional meat products, steps could be taken to reduce the costs of production and use of medium ingredients, so as to make CM price-competitive with traditional meats by 2030. The study highlighted that the ROI for CM ventures needs to be set lower than commercial investments because it is capital intensive and risky. The second was a lifecycle assessment (LCA) that tapped on data from industry partners, including A*STAR, Singapore's government agency that spearheads applied research. This was published in early 2023 (https://lnkd.in/g_xkZMfk) with two notable findings. First, while cultivated meat requires significant energy for production, the carbon footprint can be lower than that for production of chicken, pork and beef if renewable energy is deployed. Second, cultivated meat requires significantly less land compared to the three types of meat (e.g. up to 90% reduction compared to beef). To sum up, turning CM into a food staple requires a) socially motivated investment, b) a grid that is green and will be greener over time, and c) significantly less space for production. It would appear that a), b) and c) dovetail into Singapore's 30 by 30 food strategy and national Green Plan. What we need now is sustained public funding for the CM startups to navigate the valley of death. Furthermore, the public sector can be an offtaker for some of the CM products. One-third also said that providing more fruit and vegetable snacking items is a good way retailers can help consumers increase fresh consumption. Our deputy general director, Antonio Román, highlights how in the first part of the 2023/2024 fruit and vegetable campaign, Grupo Agroponiente has achieved outstanding results that reflect the success of its production and sales strategy. There was a 4% increase in both volume and turnover, compared to the same period of the previous year. Román highlighted the crucial role of growers and pointed out that the company has opted for internationalization in its production, supply and sales, which has given positive results in a short period of time. Grupo Agroponiente hopes to continue growing in the second part of the campaign, with optimistic projections for the company's international expansion.
