As an Environmental Studies graduate, stewardship is one of the first lenses that I consider any client through. Selling plant-based products, handing out reusable bags and citing the source of just a few of your key ingredients no longer makes the cut. I want investments in regenerative agriculture, divestment in resource-intensive processing, equitable partnerships with Indigenous producers, seven generation considerations and commitments. Yogi's really doing it. 🌱 Seeds is just one way we prioritize coffee's sustainability. Each year, we allocate funding from our sales—$0.01 from every pound of coffee and $1 from each pound of Iridescent, our winter blend—to support grants for projects proposed by our suppliers. These carefully curated projects prioritize sustainability, education, and community development. To date, we've allocated over $450,000 to Seeds projects, making tangible impacts in producing communities and helping sprout a sustainable future for coffee. This spring, we funded 8 projects totaling just under $40,000. Among the proposals, we noticed a strong focus on establishing seedling nurseries to meet rising demand for coffee plants and support reforestation efforts. This dual approach enhances production and benefits the environment by promoting biodiversity, conserving water, and mitigating climate change. Additionally, we received numerous applications aimed at diversifying fertilizer sources to improve soil health while meeting organic certification standards, paving the way for a greener future. Lastly, several groups were awarded grants to enhance drying systems and establish coffee sensory labs, all with the goal of securing better prices for higher-quality coffee. What was your first step in sustainability? With me, it was all about food. I had two small children and wanted them to know where their food came from. I had once read about self-picking farms and that sounded like a great idea. After two years on a waiting list, a new #CSA farm started nearby, and 10 years ago we became harvest-shareholders at CSA farm De Klepper. This not only changed our eating habits, we also became part of a new community where we learned all kinds of other things sustainable. The beginning of many next steps in #sustainability. So what was your first step or what triggered you to start asking yourself questions about sustainability?
