Hormones are tiny messengers that travel through our bloodstream, delivering important information to our cells and organs. 📣 Understanding what these hormones do and how they work is essential to maintaining good health. ⬇️ ✔️ Estrogen is primarily produced in the ovaries and plays a crucial role in the female reproductive system. In addition to regulating the menstrual cycle, estrogen plays a role in bone health, mood, sleep and more. ✔️ Progesterone is important for female reproductive health. It helps prepare the body for pregnancy and is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. It also supports mood, sleep, and thyroid function. ✔️ Cortisol is often referred to as the "stress hormone" because it's released in response to stress. It helps regulate blood sugar levels and blood pressure. When cortisol levels are chronically high, it can lead to health issues like weight gain, high blood pressure, and immune system dysfunction. ✔️ Insulin is produced by the pancreas and helps regulate blood sugar levels. When we eat, our bodies break down carbohydrates into glucose, which then enters our bloodstream. Insulin helps our cells absorb glucose, which they use for energy. Without adequate insulin or when the cells become insulin-resistant, blood sugar level rise, leading to diabetes. ✔️ T4 and T3 are thyroid hormones essential for regulating metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate. When thyroid hormone levels are too high or too low, it can lead to health issues like weight issues, fatigue, gut problems and mood disturbances. ✔️ Ghrelin is often referred to as the "hunger hormone" because it stimulates appetite and promotes fat storage. Ghrelin is produced in the stomach and signals the brain when it's time to eat. When we're hungry, our ghrelin levels increase, and when we're full, they decrease. ✔️ Leptin is a hormone that's produced by fat cells and helps regulate appetite and metabolism. It signals the brain when we're full, reducing our appetite and helping us maintain a healthy weight. When leptin levels are too low, it can lead to overeating and weight gain. Should be emphasized also that insulin is a hormone that promotes lipogenesis, aging, etc and that chronic hyperinsulinemia due to chronic carbohydrate intake (especially refined carbohydrates) is the culprit behind the development of insulin resistance and Metabolic Syndrome overall and all its subsequent complications.
