Excited to share just a few photos from an incredibly transformative two weeks at Clark Atlanta University as part of the Research Affinity Cohorts (RACs) program, organized by National Data Science Alliance (NDSA), which is sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The RACs program broadens the participation of HBCU faculty and staff in data science research by connecting multidisciplinary investigators to develop research that solves real problems in data sets and strives to remove bias and promote ethics, fairness, and validity. The program provided us opportunity to actively engage in hands-on learning and develop actionable steps for a sustainable research program, which in the case of our RAC team, called Team Dacon, led by Technical Advisor, Dr. Jamell Dacon, was themed "Unveiling Disparities: A Data-Driven Exploration of African American Health Experiences" with the subtheme "Quantifying Health Disparities by Identifying Root Causes and Social Determinants in African American communities". It was an awesome experience in research collaboration, cultural immersion, and professional development and networking. Our team is determined to continue the work. We will produce and submit research and grant proposals, attend conferences to present our research, and submit manuscripts for publication consideration. Photos here feature Team Dacon, with our Technical Advisor, Dr. Jamell Dacon, computer scientist, of Morgan State University; me; Dr. Nadine Shillingford, computer scientist & data scientist, of Meharry Medical College; Dr. Hossain Shuvo, computer scientist, of Prairie A&M University, and Dr. Lisa Mims-Devezin, biologist, of Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO), who also served as the Chancellor (or President) of that university. There is also a group photo of our team with the highly esteemed and resourceful Director of NDSA, Dr. Talitha Washington of Clark Atlanta University (in the light blue/gray suit).

The ECS cluster event on April 25 was a great opportunity to explore the data-related needs of the citizen science community. Here are some of the main takeaways from the day, stemming from discussion with over 50 attendees: ✅ Citizen science projects need better guidance and support on data ethics and management ✅ Citizen science practitioners could use more training, instead of more tools, for data analysis and visualisation (maybe collaborations with the arts could be useful here 🤔) ✅ Citizen science should explore the potential of data altruism strategies Interested in more insights? We will be publishing a report in which we will cover these takeaways, and many more! Keep an eye out 😉

OSCU ambassadors will join the Research Data Management (RDM) support Walk-In Hours every first Monday of the month Starting February 5th, there will be an OSCU ambassador present once a month at the Walk-In Hours by RDM support: https://lnkd.in/eYt2rUgB. We'll be there to answer all of your questions about open science and open education. For example, would you like to pre-register your research analyses but don’t know where to start? Or do you doubt whether to share your course materials as Open Educational Resource? The OSCU ambassadors can help you right away, or direct you to a colleague with the relevant experience

Today wiegETHs has reached 25% participation! The wiegETHs team (some of which you can see in the picture below) are super happy about this result. Thank you so much to all who have filled out the survey already. We appreciate every single answer. However, we still have a long way to go. The goal is to reach at least 40% participation. Why so many? Every day VSETH and AVETH - Academic Association of Scientific Staff at ETH Zurich work on making ETH Zürich the place that the students and mid-level academic staff need it to be. For this we talk to ETH bodies and try to find solutions to your problems. This is what we need the data for! And the more data we get, the more it will help us to stand up for your needs: - more data means a more detailed picture of what the students and mid-level academic staff at ETH need - more data means more possibilities for detailed analysis of minority groups such as small study fields etc. - more data means more credibility for the data. So more data leads to more possibilities for changing stuff at our university. So if you have not filled out the survey yet please take those 13 minutes and fill it out. If you have filled out the survey: Thank you! Please tell your friends that you have filled it out and please ask them to fill it out too. Also: if you are not an ETH student or a member of the academic staff at ETH, thanks for reading so far and please feel free to motivate some people to fill out the survey anyway. Any help is appreciated greatly. What's the future of mathematical literacy? Our answer is that it *must* include civics. And National Science Foundation (NSF) agrees. So excited to share that trubel&co won the NSF VITAL Prize in Mathematical Literacy 🎵 we in first place 🎶 This is incredible validation of our theory of change: if you believe STEM can be a tool for liberation, if you want to recruit diverse learners, if society needs a pipeline of social innovators, civic inquiry must be embedded into traditional innovation coursework in order to drive critical consciousness within technical subjects, shown by our students connecting data literacy to promoting equity, mitigating harm, and reshaping their communities for the better. 🗣 my teammm, thank you to my teammmm This work doesn't happen in a vacuum, and trubel is best sparked when in community. Thank you to all those at trubel&co for joining this journey, enabling this research agenda, and driving liberatory innovation where it's needed most. Thank you to Stanford University Department of Management Science & Engineering for seeing and supporting the need to refresh innovation pedagogy. Thank you to past funders, collaborators, and peers for amplifying our work and championing our pilots. And of course, thank you for NSF and Digital Promise for believing in us. What's next? Rumor has it #goodtrubel is loading in Florida and Hawaii... 👀
We are thrilled to announce that last week, we were awarded 🎉 FIRST PLACE 🥇 from the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s VITAL Prize in Mathematical Literacy! Asenette Ruiz, Dylan Turmeque and Danielle Katz gathered in DC at the NSF headquarters to accept our First Place award from NSF Director Sutheraman Panchanathan. The Visionary Interdisciplinary Teams Advancing Learning (VITAL) Prize Challenge has been a year-long process of refining Mapping Justice. We are so excited to continue building data literacy embedded within critical education on civics and community engagement, and using GIS to explore local justice issues. Thank you to the NSF and Digital Promise for this support and validation, enabling our mission of giving diverse communities the opportunity and tools to solve the problems they care about the most.
