Next up, in The Earthshot Prize Nominee feature, we have Better Dairy! 🌎 Better Dairy was formed to create a world where everything tastes better, starting with cheese - without consumers having to make trade-offs on sustainability or animal welfare. It recognises the problem of farming being highly unsustainable and inefficient. Despite a growing number of consumers trying to make more sustainable choices, plant-based products are yet to catch up in terms of taste, nutrition, and functionality. Better Dairy leverages precision fermentation technology, where microorganisms like yeast are tweaked and used as mini-factories to make the molecularly identical milk proteins that lend dairy its characteristic taste, texture, and functionality. By removing animals entirely from the equation, their products require 90%+ less CO2, water, and land use. It's not quite magic, but it's close! Yesterday, I attended a thought-provoking seminar led by Pat Brown, the brilliant mind behind Impossible Foods. Pat's message resonated deeply with me, reminding us that many climate challenges may seem daunting but are actually solvable puzzles waiting for our collective innovation. Pat's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Long before pioneering Impossible Foods, he carved out a remarkable scientific career, challenging conventions and reshaping paradigms. A prime example is his creation of PLoS, which propelled open-source science into the mainstream, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to driving change. During a transformative sabbatical from his 'dream job,' Pat delved into identifying key climate-associated issues and their potential solutions. It became evident to him that industrial meat production, particularly cattle farming, stood as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Recognizing the urgency, he shifted focus to developing alternatives, understanding that persuading individuals to embrace change necessitates providing enticing options. What truly struck me was Pat's holistic approach. He not only identifies problems but also explores innovative pathways to resolution that benefit all stakeholders. He's now focusing on how ranchers could financially benefit from transitioning away from cattle farming and towards biodiversity regeneration through carbon credits, showcasing a model for inclusive problem-solving. Pat's insights extend far beyond meat production. He underscores the importance of applying similar strategies across various sectors within the food industry. From dairy products to fish, there are ripe opportunities to replicate these tactics and drive meaningful change. As we navigate the complexities of climate change, Pat's approach serves as a beacon of hope. It reminds us that by aligning incentives, leveraging innovation, and embracing collaboration, we can tackle even the most daunting challenges. I'm eagerly anticipating the transformative solutions that lie ahead. Fifty years ago, NewStories’ Founder Bob Stilger had the privilege of serving as the Program Director for the EXPO ‘74 Environmental Symposium Series in Spokane, Washington. It was there that the seeds of NewStories, soon celebrating its 25th anniversary, were first planted. Back then, we had a radical notion: that people ought to truly listen to one another, embrace different perspectives, and engage in genuine dialogue. In 1974, Bob invited Wendell Berry to be a keynote speaker at the "Agriculture for a Small Planet" symposium. Berry's insights became a catalyst for the Tilth Movement in the Pacific Northwest, proving the existence of a thoughtful constituency for a better kind of agriculture. We’re sharing a letter Wendell sent to Bob and his assistant Gigi Coe to remind us that visionaries like Berry identified the challenges and possibilities we face today with remarkable clarity. While much has changed, we are still tackling similar dilemmas. The conditions Wendell identified in agriculture back then continue to resonate with those we tackle today in the Food Justice Initiative in Missouri that NewStories is supporting As we honor 25 years of NewStories, we remain dedicated to Re-Storying, Re-Patterning, and Restructuring a Regenerative Future. Our new focus areas, including Principles Guided Co-Creation, Great Transition Stories, Transformative Kinship Circles, and Transform Media, aim to guide us into new territories of endless possibilities.
