As a true Seattleite, I think I have to make this post. Today marks a bittersweet moment for us Seattle Seahawks fans as we bid farewell to the legendary Pete Carroll. A little known fact, I once worked for a presidential candidate and his subsequent PAC. I learned a lot that can be applied to product teams. 👇 Heading into the Iowa caucus in 2003, we were tied for last place, barely above 2%. We believed in our potential, but the facts told a different story. On caucus night, we shocked the world. We placed 2nd with nearly 32%, winning only two fewer delegates than the winner (the eventual nominee, John Kerry). With far less money and and a much smaller team, we had hugely outperformed the presumptive winner, Howard Dean. One little known secret of that caucus: we had made deals with other candidates that if either side had failed to reach viability in a given precinct (meaning, not capturing enough voters to garner a single delegate), they would support the other candidate. We won enough of those to stitch together a huge showing. That night, our donation servers crashed under the load of all the money come in. We thought we were it. We thought we were taking the world by storm. I’d never felt anything like it. It was exhilarating. A few weeks later, our campaign collapsed and our candidate dropped out. We simply didn’t have the time to establish a national organization and were crushed by the Super Tuesday primary schedule. We’d saved our one big swing for too late in the cycle. We left ourselves with only one out. To us the loss felt as shocking as our victory had only a month earlier. So what’s the lesson? Sometimes your only way to survival is a short-term gain. If you can only make the small bets, there’s a good chance you’ve already lost and don’t know it yet. What hurts a lot of products isn’t about ideas or resiliency or smarts or features. It’s just poor timing. It’s getting behind instead of jumping ahead. The most important cultural trait of an upstart or insurgent team is urgency. Nothing matters more than urgency. You can control a lot of things when growing a company or team or product — But can’t control time. The best choice - the only viable path - is to move as quickly as possibly. #culture #engineering #leadership

Listened to the great Matthew McConaughey give a speech this morning (I was lucky enough to meet him on set this summer)… he said a lot of things that stuck with me. One in particular stood out… “Don’t leave crumbs.. and the beauty of delayed gratification.” What are “crumbs”? They are the choices we make that make us have to look over our shoulder in the future. It’s those choices we make, where at some point down the road, that decision could negatively impact our life when it comes back around. If you leave crumbs today, they will cause you more stress tomorrow. Instead of creating outcomes that take from us, let’s make decisions that will pay us back in the future! That’s the joy of delayed gratification. As industry professionals, make those decisions today that will pay dividends in the future. Make decisions that bring ROI, don’t leave crumbs.

And so Troy Deeney's six-game tenure at Forest Green Rovers is ended with a not unexpected sacking. Meaning that Dale Vince has now gone through four managers in a year. Ian Burchnall. Duncan Ferguson. David Horseman. Troy Deeney. Four managers. And potentially two relegations. Two relegations is not unlucky. Or unjust. It is a consequence of how everything that happens off the field, manifests itself on the field. You are a bottom of the league operation. Whether you like it or not. But none of this just happens. As an owner or leader of a club, you have to pay attention. Every day. Every week. If you are not available to do so, then you have to surround yourself with people who can. It begins with the things that matter to you. What it is the club stands for? If say, your core values centre around Development, as in people come to Forest Green to develop their careers, then Development becomes a clear measurement.. Meetings need to begin, 'Tell me a development story from the last week'. 'Whose improved. In what way?' These stories become part of the culture you are constantly creating and evolving. So what if you ask the question, and there are no development stories. Red flag. Why not? What are we going to do about it? (Note: Development is simply an example here. The Value or Values you stand for could be, Responsibility. Learning. Integrity. Passion. Leadership. Unity. And a combination of qualities. As long as they are measurable on a daily and weekly basis). But if you have no metrics to measure daily life around the club other than results on the pitch, then your inner compass can easily lose its clarity of focus. Meaning that things drift. Into a fog of poor decisions. Knee jerk reactions. Most of which are too late, because the critical moments have passed. The critical moments when you had chance to address the things which were undermining the operation. Why? Because you or your team weren't paying attention. Or you didn't know what you were meant to be paying attention to. Because you hadn't made the important things, important. Changing managers might provide a temporary reprieve. But ultimately if you don't have collective leadership that is switched on, tuned in and observant of the micro-details of culture, it will be a short term reprieve. It is said that a small amount of information can tell you a lot. But only if you're paying attention. For if you're not eventually Dr. Reality will come to town. Or The New Lawns.
