Pedals of Progress: Women Steering the Cycling Revolution On International Women's Day, we spotlight the indelible mark women have made on the cycling landscape. From early adventurers defying norms to modern-day champions breaking records, women have cycled beyond mere recreation, using bikes as instruments of empowerment and change. Historic figures like Annie Londonderry set the wheels of change in motion, proving the bicycle to be a symbol of freedom. The competitive scene too has seen legends; Beryl Burton and Marianne Vos are just the tip of the iceberg, inspiring a new generation of female cyclists. Beyond competition, women have spearheaded cycling advocacy, pushing for safer and more inclusive spaces for all cyclists. Innovations in design and technology also bear the mark of women's ingenuity, making cycling more accessible and enjoyable. Yet, hurdles remain. Gender disparities in professional cycling, safety concerns, and representation gaps call for continued action. International Women's Day is both a celebration of strides made and a clarion call for the journey ahead towards equality in cycling. In a male-dominated cycling arena, we're really proud of the fact that 64% of our Rider Community are female 🚲 🎉 But it raises the question of why? When it comes to concerns about cycling there are many that are unique to women. And, despite all the progress, women are still disproportionately responsible for looking after children and doing domestic tasks, which has made using a bike as transportation relatively unviable. E-cargo bikes are answering some of these challenges, and so is our our service offering, which makes our customers feel safer and more supported on the road. 🌟 A Weekend of Triumph: The BTT Sussex and London Experience at the Super Series World Championship Triathlon🌟 This weekend marked a milestone for the The Black Tri Tribe (BTT) community. Members from Sussex and London gathered to witness the sheer magnitude of human potential at the British Triathlon Federation supertri World Championship. It was a spectacle of endurance, where every stroke, pedal, and step was a testament to the power of perseverance. For the first time, I immersed myself in the thrill of the live event—both in-person and virtually. The electric atmosphere was palpable, as we watched athletes like Beth Potter and @Cassandre Beaugrand delivered performances that transcended the ordinary. Their grit and grace on this global stage brought the entire arena to its feet, uniting us in awe. As the founder of the Black Tri Tribe and a steadfast advocate for inclusivity in sports, this event resonated deeply. It was a celebration of what we stand for—a world where the starting line is accessible to all, and every finish is a collective victory for diversity. Beth and Cassandre didn't just race; they paved the way for female athletes everywhere, showcasing the boundless potential of women in sport. Their success is our inspiration. It fuels our mission to lower barriers and champion the involvement of Black and Asian communities in triathlon. As a community leader, it reaffirms my commitment to empowering our members through the transformative power of sport. We are more than a community; we are a force for change. IMBA Europe is tackling diversity in the cycling/mtb sector by walking the walk - or it is riding the ride? The #IMBASummit2024 will have 40% female speakers and panelists. Additionally, they have set an ambitious target of 30% female participation in the event (from 18% in previous years). Fantastic initiative by the team - Cathy Naveaux Thomas Larsen Schmidt Manon Carpenter Mark Torsius During the summit, we seek to have diverse voices and thoughts at every table throughout the program. Additionally, there will be a women`s only meeting in which to speak about challenges specific to the MTB sector and together, identify which issues we should focus on in the future. Why women only? To create a safe space in which to share and be heard. Gender equality in sports is not only about fairness but also about integrity and giving equal opportunities to the other half of humanity…. It is essential for the growth of sports.

This past weekend, while enjoying the Hungarian Grand Prix with my husband, I found myself pondering a question that may seem straightforward but is quite profound. I asked him, "Why don't we see women racing alongside men in Formula 1?" Despite talented female drivers like Bianca Bustamante making significant strides in motorsport, there are still several barriers preventing women from competing in F1. Historically, motorsport has been male-dominated, with fewer opportunities for women to progress through the ranks. Additionally, securing sponsorship and support can be more challenging for female drivers, which is crucial for advancing to higher levels of racing. Moreover, the physical demands of F1 are often cited, although many believe that with the right training and support, women can meet these demands just as well as men. There's also a lingering stereotype that racing is a "man's sport," which further hinders the inclusion of women. There have been a handful of women who in the past have successfully made their mark on F1. 🏁Maria Teresa de Filippis - The first woman to race in F1, she competed in the late 1950s and participated in three World Championship Grands Prix. 🏁Lella Lombardi - The most successful female driver in F1 history, she competed in the mid-1970s and is the only woman to have scored points in a World Championship race, with a sixth-place finish at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. 🏁Divina Galica - A British driver who attempted to qualify for three F1 races in the late 1970s but did not make it to the starting grid. 🏁Giovanna Amati - The last woman to have entered the Formula 1 World Championship, she attempted to qualify for three races with Brabham in 1992 but did not make it to the starting grid. If there are available seats, why aren't women being given the chance to race at this level? It’s clear we need to challenge these stereotypes, provide equal opportunities, and support female drivers more robustly. While these drivers have paved the way, there is a growing movement to encourage and support more women in motorsport. Initiatives like the F1 Academy and increased support from teams and sponsors are steps toward a more inclusive future in racing. I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights on this topic.
