It's #WellnessWednesdayxDST! Join us tonight, May 8, 2024, at 8:00 PM ET to learn more information to be able to build your Special Education Toolkit and relationship with NAMI. Did you realize that developmental disorders such as autism, reading and math deficits, attention deficit, and intellectual disabilities are mental health disorders? Although children may first show these symptoms in educational settings, the symptoms are, in fact, indicative of mental health disorders. The National Physical and Mental Health Subcommittee has partnered with the National Educational Development Subcommittee to develop a highly informative and engaging webinar to aid families who may care for or interact with children and young adults with special needs within the education system. We will address the referral, assessment, and treatment for children with special needs as well as share how you may advocate for your loved one. This webinar will also showcase the collaboration with NAMI on collegiate campuses. See you tonight on Facebook! #DST1913 #DSTLiveWell #EmpoweringOurCommunities

It can be easy to assume that an autistic person will transition between states of attention as quickly as non-autistic people do. This is not always the case. Due to something called monotropism, some autistic people may hyperfocus on one thing at a time. This allows for intense joy and being in a flow state, but can also mean it takes longer to transfer attention from one thing to another. Today, Centre for Mental Health and Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) have published a new report exploring who is missing from school and the links between school attendance and mental health. We - our staff, youth ambassadors and parent/carer lived experience partners - welcome the report, entitled 'Not in school: The mental health barriers to school attendance'. It outlines the barriers to school attendance including rising mental health problems, access to timely support, racism, discrimination, bullying and poverty. These need to be addressed and there are clear recommendations to do so. At Charlie Waller Trust, we can help education providers with our whole education approach to mental health and wellbeing, and families with a child or young person who is struggling with school attendance via our Parent/Carer Peer Support Programme. I work with schools and organisations globally to ensure rapid and targeted development through consultancy, training and partnership working. Inclusion & SEND specialist. Parenting support.
Coping with transition and change… This video clearly identifies why school can be particularly distressing and triggering for Autistic children and young people. However, I believe It also explains why so many children, who were able to cope in their primary setting, are simply unable to when moving on to secondary - where they are expected to move rooms, have different teachers who have different styles of approach, change groupings, and face countless transition challenges multiple times a day. Changing states of attention can be more challenging for anyone who is feeling less emotionally ‘held’ or secure - think how you feel in new, different, uncomfortable situations - consider Maslow’s hierarchy - and always be professionally curious about behaviours. Let your first thought be ‘can’t’ not ‘won’t’ Let the next one be ‘distressed’ not challenging’ Reflect on how that reframes things within you and then seek to support, enable and foster belonging, not blame, punish and exclude. Please. #teachertraining #Inclusion #SEND #teachers
