Congratulations to Cricket Australia on a great sixth #cricketworldcup win.
Beating the #indiancricketteam in India is a great achievement by any nation.
I have read some social media posts, articles on websites, and watched some reports on TV, claiming it was the greatest win ever, etc, etc, which I think is a bit over the top. 😳
The Indian team had its flaws, ie, no tail, and Australia were the first team to expose this.
The lack of an Indian tail was well known before the start of the competition. It was a gamble to try and win every game without the tail being exposed. And for the gamble to work, the Indian bowlers had to produce the goods and bowl the opposition out.
Sadly for India, the bowlers didn't produce the goods in the 🏆 World Cup final.
Mohammed Shami was the player of the tournament for me. 👏 But even he couldn't bowl out the Aussies on his own.
Ultimately, Australia had the better balanced team. Flair at the top of the innings, steady batters at four and five - capable of keeping calm when the game was in the balance, a competent keeper, a top class spinner, and a pace bowling trio that is simply the best in the world.
Give Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood the right conditions, and they will destroy any team. Even a batting line up as good as India's. Which is the best in the world in my view.
30 overs bowled by Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood on a helpful wicket is enough to stifle most teams. Ben Stokes showed the best way to negate the trio in the recent Ashes. And that was by producing benign wickets and turning it into a batting competition on a lifeless flat track.
Giving those three a helpful pitch was India's second, and probably biggest, failing of the whole competition.
Having said that, I genuinely believe that Australia are far stronger in the field, than they are batting. So for them to withstand that onslaught at the start of their innings when Jasprit Bumrah was unplayable, was a great effort
Australia was well able to make a mess of that small chase from 3/47, so from that perspective, it was a great performance. Greatest ever though, not for me.
Next for the Aussies is to win the T20 World Cup in 2024, and equal England’s record of holding both white ball World Cups simultaneously. Do that, and this team can be talked about as one of Australia's greatest ever. 👏
