I watched a documentary this morning on "The Real Mad Men of Chicago" where one employee from the Leo Burnett company discussed how a client received a letter from the employee's daughter that read 📩: "Dear [Client], I am eight years old. I never see my father. He is always in New York. I want you to build a building here [Chicago]." Think about that for a moment. 🤔 Back then, the technology we have today didn't exist. It was difficult for companies to have a choice of giving employees flexibility. 📊 However, now, there aren't data backed excuses or environmental limitations that suggest we should be in the office 5 days a week, 9am to 5pm. 🛟Flexibility isn't about laziness of work, it's about having more life. Although I am wearing sweatpants right now with a decent t-shirt and a nice cardigan - #flexible work isn't solely about being comfortable while working. It's about being able to blend work and life together to have a more fulfilling experience in the short amount of time we have on this earth. Is that melodramatic? Maybe. 🤐 But I'd say requiring someone to be away from their family enough where a child writes a letter to a client is a sign that without flexibility in work, employees miss more than they gain. Work, in my opinion, was broken before the pandemic. We are at an inflection point where we can correct this with the right technology and behavioral changes without sacrificing #productivity or #engagement.
