Did you know that concrete has made its way beyond our planet? It's not just an earthly construction material; it has boldly gone where few materials have gone before—space! Imagine the International Space Station (ISS), a microcosm of life beyond our atmosphere, where astronauts live and work in the vastness of space. Surrounded by the vast emptiness of the cosmos, they find the familiar presence of specially formulated space-grade concrete. This cosmic application of concrete is more than just a fun fact; it highlights the adaptability and versatility of this common construction material. In the harsh environment of space, concrete on the ISS plays a crucial role in providing a familiar and reliable structure for astronauts to live and conduct experiments. It's a testament to the ingenuity of human engineering, bringing a piece of home into the vast unknown. So, next time you look up at the stars, remember that even in the far reaches of space, concrete is there, bridging the gap between the Earth and the cosmos. A cheap and easy way to enter the orbital domain has been around for centuries. "Max Space's expandable habitats promise to be larger, stronger, and more versatile than anything like them ever launched, not to mention cheaper and lighter by far than a solid, machined structure. And despite their balloon-like looks, they are, like their predecessors, quite resilient to the many and various perils of #space." https://lnkd.in/g-4um4cT #spaceindustry #aerospace #engineering #orbit

Accelerating Singapore's Environmental Sustainability Strategic Objectives Creatively Through Design Science
https://lnkd.in/gsinaud8 "Space elevators would elegantly solve one of the biggest hurdles in space travel, foregoing the need for heavy and expensive rockets to access the Earth's orbit. The concept was first envisioned by Russian rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in a 1895 book called "Dreams of Earth and Sky," in which he described an imaginary 22,000-mile tower. Russian engineer Yuri Artsutanov later expanded on the idea, describing a cable that connects the Earth's surface to a geosynchronous satellite." It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, we already have the means to building such a structure nearly 3/4 century ago. #EquitorialSpaceAccess

Bricks made of meteorite dust to build in space 🧱🌕 The European Space Agency recently 3D printed LEGO-style bricks out of meteorite dust. They want to examine how lunar settlers could use materials on the Moon to build bases. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄❓ 1. Reducing reliance on Earth-made supplies is key to build permanent structures on the Moon. 2. The experience helped scientists explore creative solutions using materials available on site, and different designs and techniques. 3. The findings could be leveraged by NASA for their Artemis Program near the Moon's South Pole in 2026.
