This land is over to grazing from arable. Perfectly functional fencing, (although improvised stile difficult to use), so fit for purpose for both land-uses? Whilst fully understanding the staffing and wider resources required to coppice, plant, establish and care for a new hedgerow, a low-cost option would be to allow the existing shrubs to grow uncut and plant a small number of irregularly spaced field trees along the boundary. This would provide summer shade for stock, conserve soil and provide for the very long-term 'replacement' for mature field oaks. Given that a Public Right of Way follows one side of the boundary, in my view these (and wider public) benefits outweigh the marginal loss of cultivatable land along the boundary. #hedgerows, #landscape, #farming, #environment
