Catch22 are pleased that the long-awaited Victims and Prisoners Bill has finished its journey through parliament and will become law. We hope the passing of the bill will strengthen the place of victims in the criminal justice system by giving legislative footing to the Victim’s Code, increasing transparency in the treatment of victims and giving them access to more options and support. It is by no means the end of our campaign to give victims a voice and promote a more restorative criminal justice system, but its passing is important to show the intentions of Parliament towards making victims’ rights a priority. We welcome the bill’s footing to hold agencies to account, improve collaboration, and broaden the legal definition of a victim. However, we remain concerned about the lack of provision for victims of anti-social behaviour and for those eligible for access to restorative justice. Find out more about how Catch22 works to support victims of crime and antisocial behaviour here: https://ow.ly/yUjA50RYn4v

Grief and Trauma Therapist • Organizational Development Consultant • Program Evaluation • Faculty Intern • Corporate Trainer
As a trauma and grief therapist, I spend much time sitting with the hurting. I have seen a significant increase in the number of clients who come to me due to violent crimes. The question is, how do we reduce the number of violent crimes and the number of violent offenders on the streets of Memphis and the surrounding Mid-South? One tool was proven to help support the appropriate detaining of violent criminals and those with an increased potential for violent crime. Is the justice system in the Mid-South, especially in Memphis, utilizing this tool to aid in the battle against violent criminals being on the streets? If not, then why? Our judges should be adhering to this risk assessment in addition to their professional experience/instinct when determining whether to release or detain a criminal. https://lnkd.in/gC5ZKdAm

Are you a victim or survivor of a crime that occurred in #Oklahoma? Will you help inform the MODERN Justice Taskforce by sharing your experience anonymously? In July, State of Oklahoma leaders developed the MODERN Justice taskforce to understand various criminal justice challenges within our state--and figure out how to address them with legislative, policy, and procedural change. The Crime and Justice Institute is one of the taskforce partners. They are helping gather data and information to ensure the work of the taskforce is most reflective of the needs of #Oklahomans. The purpose of this anonymous survey is to hear directly from crime survivors about their experiences and identify potential priorities for the Task Force to consider. Please feel free to share this link with others. The voices of those individuals most directly impacted by crime should be elevated in this task force process. The Crime and Justice Institute has also connected with formerly incarcerated individuals about their experiences. They want to make sure we're getting information from all affected parties. #criminaljusticereform #criminaljustice #oklahoma #oklahomacriminaljustice

“Our models forecast a small rise in Chicago’s violent crime rate in 2021 and 2022, followed by a decline over the next three years, and a decrease in the property crime rate over the entire 2021–2025 period,“ write authors Richard Rosenfeld and James Austin in a new Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation report “The Future of Crime in Chicago and the Impact of Reducing the Prison Population on Crime Rates.” Read the report here: <https://ow.ly/o7jC50QgOrX

59% of violent crime went unsolved in 2022. Our failure to prioritize the solving of violent crime leads to: - Less safety for victims & communities - More risk of retaliatory violence - Less justice for victims and their families who have been harmed - Less deterrence from the justice system as a whole - Less trust in the justice system’s ability to protect & respond.
