Design is more important than ever. In a world where AI will be able to output fully-functioning interfaces from a simple prompt, craft will differentiate great products from obvious solutions. I hope that the features launching today at #Config2024 will support that end-to-end process and unblock creativity so teams can go from idea to product. Let’s go through some of our launches: - New product: Figma Slides! You’ve been asking for speaker notes so we are giving you that and more. We’re gradually rolling this out so please try it and let us know what you think. - Figma AI: Our approach to bringing AI to the Figma editor is to address real pain points that stand in the way of your craft. Today, you’ll see a lot of AI features that do monotonous tasks for you and help you stay in the flow (Rename Layers and Make Prototype). Some are still MVP, but others are immediately useful. For example, Make Design helps you get to your first idea faster with a first draft and Visual Search finds similar designs already existing in your team. - UI3: We don’t take UI changes lightly. We put a lot of thought into making UI3 in Figma feel familiar while also reducing bloat and making it easier to use. We know that it may take some time to adjust to these changes, so we’re slowly rolling them out to users, starting today. You are welcome to turn this redesign off as we improve UI3 with your feedback. Eventually we will migrate all users to UI3. - Dev Mode: Since the launch, teams have marked over 4 million designs as ready for dev! We’re now introducing Ready for Dev View, Focus View, and new statuses. - Also available today, Code Connect is out of beta with new improvements like surfacing connected code snippets in the component playground, a new tool to streamline setup, and support for React, React Native, iOS, Android (with more to come!). Thank you to everyone who showed up for Config IRL and virtually! Lots more on what we’ve built and what we’re building here: https://lnkd.in/eRavMsr4

The thing that frustrates me about all the AI tools I'm seeing in the design field is... designing things isn't and hasn't ever been tedious to me. I love every step of the process. The craft. I geek out about organizing my layers and finding the most economical ways to build a prototype. That's what is rewarding to me, that's what I got into this for. I didn't get into design to be a manager or write prompts. I got into it because those things folks keep calling tedious are fun for me. I just think a lot of folks are in this line of work only for the money, and those of us who genuinely care about design are quickly becoming obsolete.

On what material was your "AI" trained?

Nothing, absolutely nothing was/is added to the app that is actually making the product better for us designers. It's obvious that your core user base isn't what's in your interest anymore — and that might've been the final push for us to migrate to competing apps. Oh, and you're welcome, for getting to use my designs for your AI to train on. Without my consent. I'll skip the name calling but you get the sentiment.

Prototyping capabilities are still lacking. Figma isn’t in a place yet where you can design the whole product and handoff to developers unless you are creating a very basic experience. Dylan Field any strategic plans to make inroads in this area? The nocode apps are here and we can already go from design to product without the need to write code.

Amazing product updates again Dylan Field!! 👏👏👏. I am concerned about the AI content training piece though. Is the training contained only to my account like a personal agent, or is it shared and integrated into the feature set for the broader community? The former would be more desirable, but if it’s the latter then I feel like those who opt in should at the very least be continuously compensated somehow for “licensing” their design ideas to Figma. This would mirror creator AI agreements happening in the arts and entertainment industry.

Great insights, Dylan! The launch of Figma Slides and the enhancements in Figma AI are exciting developments that will undoubtedly streamline workflows and unleash creativity. UI3’s thoughtful redesign and the new Dev Mode features are game-changers for design and development collaboration. Looking forward to seeing how these new tools empower teams to create even better products. Kudos to the Figma team!

The AI features in Figma are really cool. I have been playing around with it to see what it is capable of. Right now, it is a good starting point for ideas.. like how we used to go to a Dribbble or Pinterest for some inspiration. Many designers I have spoken to fear that it would make them go from a "designer" to a "prompter". As far as I see it, the "designer" is here to stay until AI can think as a user and as the product managers/stakeholders (these guys!). There is always the risk of mediocre designers using AI to build good stuff though. It would also be interesting to see the bucket-load of opportunities it opens up in terms of design automation.

I was just telling some colleagues about a meetup you hosted way back in the early days at the Figma office, and being told the in-house design team used Figma to design Figma 🤯 Glad the tradition continues! Fantastic trajectory for the product and company

Million Dollars Advice to Figma: Has anyone noticed that Figma events don't seem as captivating as Apple events? Apple events are so well-scripted, and the way they introduce products and features is just so captivating which makes them feel really special. Even if there aren't many changes from one product to the next, the way Apple presents its features makes it seem like they have introduced something groundbreaking. The speakers at Apple events are so well trained, and their delivery is so smooth, making the whole presentation feel like a movie. This is one of the reasons why people love to watch Apple events. On the other hand, Figma makes significant changes every year, but the way they present their features doesn't seem to excite the viewers. Dylan Field, the CEO at Figma, needs to work on his communication skills. He seems like a nice guy but struggles to effectively communicate the features of Figma, which makes the viewers tedious. I truly believe that Figma has become an Apple-level product in the design industry, with stable and amazing features. Therefore, I think Figma must work on its event presentations. This would not only make Figma more popular but also lead to a significant increase in revenue.
