Both product managers and filmmakers must be able to manage a budget. Product managers must ensure that their product is developed and launched within budget. Filmmakers must also ensure that their film is produced and released within budget. Both product managers and filmmakers must be able to work with a variety of stakeholders. Product managers must work with designers, engineers, marketing professionals, and others to bring their product to market. Filmmakers must also work with actors, directors, cinematographers, producers, and others to produce and release their film. Both product managers and filmmakers must be able to adapt to change. Entry Level Filmmakers: Can You Wear Every Hat Without Losing Your Head? We all get the urge. That burning ambition to take the reins, be the captain of our cinematic ship, and wear every filmmaking hat on set: producer, director, writer, sound guy, caterer (okay, maybe not that last one). But for entry-level filmmakers, donning too many hats can be a recipe for burnout and disaster. Here's why: 1. Jack of All Trades, Master of None: Sure, you can write a decent script and know your camera angles, but excelling in each role requires intense focus and specialised skills. Juggling responsibilities dilutes your effectiveness in each area, impacting the overall quality of your film. 2. Tunnel Vision & Creative Collisions: Wearing the director's hat can blind you to potential improvements from other perspectives. By delegating, you invite fresh ideas and avoid creative collisions that halt production. Trust your team, let them shine, and watch your project blossom. 3. Decision Fatigue & Burnout: Every aspect of filmmaking is filled with crucial decisions. As a lone wolf filmmaker, the constant pressure to choose the right lighting, costume, or editing cut can lead to crippling decision fatigue, hindering your ability to think clearly and make sound judgments. 4. Leadership Vacuum & Unfocused Crew: A director needs to be present, focused, and a source of inspiration for the crew. Wearing too many hats means dividing your attention, creating a leadership vacuum that leaves your team feeling lost and demotivated. 5. The Money Pit & Missed Opportunities: Producing requires strategic financial planning and resource allocation. Trying to handle it yourself while directing can lead to budget mismanagement, missed opportunities for collaboration, and potentially, a film left unfinished. Don't get me wrong, ambition is beautiful. But as entry-level filmmakers, our focus should be on honing our core skills, building trust with collaborators, and demonstrating leadership potential. Learn to delegate, listen to your team, and let your passion shine through in your chosen role. Remember, a great film takes a village, not a one-man army. So, take a deep breath, filmmakers. Put down those extra hats, focus on your strengths, and build a supportive team. How getting laid off from my entry-level digital video producer job led me to become a TV executive producer within 2 years: In 2020, I got laid off and was collecting unemployment. I had to make a decision: A. Get another job at a company ("not risky"). B. Make my side hustle film projects my full-time gig ("risky"). I decided to take the risk and go 100% all-in on my film projects for a year straight. I downgraded my living situation, cut expenses, picked up part-time work when necessary, and dedicated my time towards building a body of work. 1 year later, I sold the original film concept for what is now my first unscripted TV show on Prime Video & Amazon Studios. Every rejection is a lesson. It forced me to re-evaluate, adapt, and figure out a way to keep going. The REAL risk was staying at a job that wouldn't value or promote me for years. No jobs till next year for the VFX, film and TV industry! Apparently... Except I'm seeing loads of studios hiring for a variety of projects. Staff celebrating new roles and new contracts, all over my feed. What you choose to believe shapes your life. (And also shapes the social media algorithim lol) Right now you can chose to believe there are jobs and you can get a contract in the next month or you can choose to believe you have to wait till 2025. I do believe the industry is unstable. This belief made me take action to create other streams of income so when these times happen I don't get stressed about survival! Once you have a stable income make sure strikes, short contracts and the instability of the industry never effect your home life in a negative way again and build those mutiple streams of income!

Voice actors get really excited about several things. Here is an incomplete list of some of those things. 1. Connecting with people in the industry. Producers, Directors, Video Editors, Talent Agents, Coaches, Fellow Actors and others. 2. Building on those connections and fostering those relationships. 3. Getting heard. 4. Getting hired. 5. When I was working my first Production Assistant gig, I learned one lesson that has applied to basically ever other position I've worked in my career. "The smaller the production, the larger the role you need to play." Now this was told to me while I was a PA on a 40+ person television production, but it has stayed true across every project I've worked on since. This doesn't mean that working on small projects or as a part of a large organization is bad. Both environments can be fantastic for you in the right scenario. To me, this phrase helps you understand where you efforts will serve your team the best. For me now, it's taught me that I enjoy working in small to mid-size operations. These are the spaces that allow my natural desire to broaden my horizons and pick-up new skills to also be incredibly beneficial to the team as a whole. If you prefer to master the tasks at the core of your position, and add value by pushing further down one specific area of expertise, then maybe being part of a large operation is a better fit. Just my experience reflecting on the variety of environments I've been in. What do you think?
