In the security industry, you can never judge a book by its cover. Recently, several children were accused of attacking a security guard at Walgreens in Boston’s Downtown Crossing after stealing items from the store. Boston police reported that a group of 15 children threw soda bottles, punched, hit, and pushed the security guard. Surveillance footage shows the kids running into the Walgreens and then fleeing with big bags of stolen items. The guard was assaulted when he tried to stop them. Criminals can look like anyone, but we are deeply saddened that these were kids. #SecurityMatters #StayVigilant #CommunitySafety First Comment: Read more:

Individuals who engage in snatch-and-grab thefts from retail stores are often driven by a combination of psychological needs for power, excitement, and control. These thefts provide a sense of power, allowing perpetrators to dominate the store environment and outsmart security measures, thereby boosting their self-esteem and status. The excitement comes from the adrenaline rush of the high-risk, rapid nature of the crime, offering an immediate sense of gratification and a high from the thrill that can become addictive. Stealing helps people assert control over their environment and circumstances, countering feelings of powerlessness or inadequacy in other areas of their lives. When a thief successfully executes a crime it fosters a sense of mastery and control, and the stolen goods can be used to gain influence within their social circles. It's understandable that a retailer, such as Rite Aid, that has been highlighted in the news as a repeated target of shoplifting would seek out available options to address shrink/loss prevention. As a reminder, Rite Aid and Duane Reade have both closed stores due to the material impact increased theft has had on their operations. Unfortunately, the FTC took issue with their approach. Biometrics aren't necessarily a problematic tool. The key would be appropriate notice to consumers who would be subject to such measures and placing proper protocols around the access and use of information gained from these heightened security measures. #theretaillawyer #retail #lossprevention #retailevolution #shrink #security #theft #theftprevention #attorneyadvertisement #bricksandmortar https://lnkd.in/ernEEFCn

Good morning all It is the Sunday Debate you know the Sunday debate that's been going for 5yrs now! A few weeks back there was a heated conversation between us and one other and it was about Retail Security. Theft has sky rocketed and there is a good report from the British Retail Consortium detailing costs etc. In security it is down to us to reduce theft. Which is kind of interesting as it isn't eliminate it is reduce. So the question is: Q: A lone security officer on a retail door. Effective deterrant or just wasting time? Intervene and chase, or not to intervene? Is this man the world’s worst social engineer or a real dummy? 🤔 A 22-year-old man pretending to be a mannequin stood in a storefront window holding a shopping bag while not moving a muscle. 🤫 When the store closed, he got to work stealing jewelry 💍, after which he ate at a restaurant 🍽️ and then changed clothes 👗 to rob the cash register 💰 at another mall. Fortunately, mall security 👮 spotted the one-man-crime-wave and called the police. 🚓 He was arrested and faces ten years in jail. 😱 For cybersecurity awareness month, don’t just tell your employees about the dangers of cyberspace. Also, tell them about physical security! 🔒 Here are a few tidbits on physical security from “Mobilizing the C-suite”: 😲 Beware the trick called “Tailgating”: An employee is utterly oblivious to the stranger sneaking in behind as the employee badges into a restricted area. 😈 Watch out for the hack “Piggybacking”: An employee is tricked by a cybercriminal claiming to be a building inspector who requests access to an off-limits area, such as the data center. 👀 Keep an eye out for the nosy pursuit of “Shoulder Surfing”: An employee logging into a computer is snooped on by a co-worker observing slit-eyed as the password is keyed in. 🗑️ “Dumpster Diving” is downright dirty: An employee throws out files containing sensitive data, which are fished out of the trash by a cybercriminal and used to create a phishing attack against the company. 🐛 Nothing is nastier than a “USB Drop Attack”: An employee stumbles upon a USB drive on the tarmac of the office parking lot and, thinking it belongs to a co-worker, inserts the USB drive into a computer, where it uploads a crypto worm infecting the network with ransomware. Everyone makes mistakes, but the biggest blunder of all is not having a conversation with your workforce about physical security – talk about it till you’re blue in the face; talk about it till the cows come home; talk about it till the sun don’t shine; then, when you’re all poured out, talk about it some more! 💬 Remember, cybersecurity is not just an IT issue; it’s a business issue. And it starts in the C-suite! 👊 Hey, cybersecurity pros! I hope you found this post valuable and informative.
