As we embrace the vital role of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) in our workplaces, it's crucial to reflect on the support systems we have in place for them. Drawing from my counselling background, I understand the importance of continuous support and supervision to navigate the emotional toll of this work. MHFAs, often equipped with just the basics, face significant emotional and psychological stressors that can impact their wellbeing. Employers need to offer more than just basic training; continuous professional development, supervision, and access to counselling are essential to safeguard MHFAs' mental health. It's time for organisations to step up and ensure their MHFAs have the robust support they need to thrive and help others effectively. Choosing the wrong Mental Health First Aiders can have dangerous consequences. Let me explain... 👉🏻 Not everyone is able to maintain healthy boundaries. Overstepping them can so easily happen when recruitment is rushed and there's little clarity around their role. This opens the business up to legal risk. 👉🏻 Recruiting individuals solely around their passion for mental health means we may overlook the correct training needed to engage in supportive conversations - putting those seeking support at risk. 👉🏻 When we choose individuals that are unable to commit to the day-to-day of being a MHFA, we can lose engagement and confidence in the network. 👉🏻 Worst of all, these things can damage the overall wellbeing strategy and buy-in from leadership. It's hard to list everything but the impact goes beyond what you might expect. It's so sad to see because MHFA & Champion networks have the power to completely transform the workplace. And they are needed now more than ever. But there are solutions that don’t mean scrapping everything, you can simply address the problems with your existing network. It's time to remove the stigma around Mental Health in the workplace. As employers, we have the power to change the narrative surrounding mental health in the recruitment industry. We can't change the nature of our work, but we can change the level of support and investment we provide for our team's mental well-being. At THOMAS, we are working towards removing the stigma around mental health and creating a safe space for open dialogue with all our colleagues. Here are some ways that we are doing this: 🧡 We've implemented regular monthly catch-ups with our team, led by our Group Services Manager Natalie Hinton, where there is no agenda. The team are free to speak about whatever is on their mind. 🧡 We are currently working on training some of our staff to be Mental Health First Aiders. 🧡 We have created and implemented workshops where we can highlight important topics surrounding mental health, how to identify early signs, and what to do. 𝘼 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚: Although we might be a little crazy, we wouldn't be in this industry if we didn't love it. The reward at the end of the day when everything's gone right is addicting and it's what gets us up in the morning, ready to do it all over again. But we all know that can change in the blink of an eye. Let's look after each other, support where we can, and encourage each other to seek help if needed.
