Recycling is often misunderstood , and it’s important to recognize that the more plastic a company produces, the more of their waste we find in our environment. Most of us already know that plastic is poison for our planet, but we don't know WHY single-use plastic is considered bad. Also known as disposable plastic, single-use plastic (such as plastic bottles, cutlery, and straws) is designed to be tossed away after one use – yes, even if it's marked as recyclable. And this is bad because: • Single-use plastics don't biodegrade. They simply break down into micro particles that continue to contaminate the environment, including our water sources and food. 🍔💧 • Only about 9% of plastic waste is recycled ♻️. The rest is either burned or dumped, meaning they contribute to harmful greenhouse gas emissions. 🌿🌬️ • It takes about 1000 years for one plastic bag to degrade in a landfill- by which time it has become millions of little microplastics that absorb toxins and enhance pollution. The race against plastic pollution is on, and the stakes are high. By 2025, big players like Nestlé aim for all plastics to be recyclable, while L’Oreal targets entirely sustainable packaging. P&G has set its sights on reducing virgin plastic use by half come 2030. Yet, the ambition to transform our waste systems is meeting tough challenges. Advanced recycling plants, seen as a beacon of hope for managing plastic waste, are facing technical and operational hurdles, with some not reaching their full potential as swiftly as needed. My approach combines innovation with the circular economy principles, emphasising the need for community and corporate social responsibility involvement. I collaborate with global corporations, philanthropists, local governments, and communities to develop holistic waste management infrastructures that are viable and sustainable. While advanced recycling plants are part of the solution, they're just one piece of the larger puzzle of creating a truly circular economy—one where every piece of plastic has its place and purpose without harming our environment. I’m encouraged by the commitments of large corporations to reduce plastic waste and increase recyclability, but I know the journey to a waste-free world is complex. It's #Plasticfreejuly and Freshkeg is all here for it with our Smart Milk system that eliminates the use of plastic milk bottles completely. It will be of particular interest to coffee chains and large cafe outlets that use high volumes of milk, and tough targets to reduce their plastic use. It's a packaging, delivery and dispensing solution that eliminates single use plastic milk bottles altogether and significantly reduces milk waste through the convenient 'milk-on-tap' system. Together with our Freshkeg community we've saved over 30,000 2 litre plastic milk bottles so far and have set ourselves a minus-a-million challenge. Heading into 2024, living without plastic feels as impossible as living without water, medicine, or clothing. Plastic is everywhere—from the depths of the oceans to our blood-brain layers. Despite needing ~1,000 years to decompose, we rely on plastic for its durability, pliability, and low cost. Recycling plastic at scale is a giant myth due to industrial constraints—and regardless of how much we put in the blue bin, it mostly ends up in landfills, oceans, and eventually groundwater and fish. This new year alone, the world will produce about 400 million metric tons of plastic waste with no sustainable plan for what to do with it. It’s no surprise that there’s an increasing call for living “without” plastic. Can that be done?

We've been hearing a lot about #AdvancedRecycling, or #Pyrolysis. Is it really the next best thing for how to recycle plastic? Let's break it down. - Most old plastic in pyrolysis doesn’t become new plastic; only 15-20 pounds of reusable plastic can be expected from 100 pounds of plastic waste. - Pyrolysis heavily relies on extracting fossil fuels, with resulting plastic containing no more than 10% recycled material (which is generally overstated and is more likely to be between 2%-5%) - Critics like Neil Tangri have labeled pyrolysis a "fairy tale" due to the lack of evidence supporting its effectiveness. This is why Mind Your Plastic is advocating for the reduction of harmful and hard-to-recycle plastics and upstream solutions. This Water Bottle Diverts Ocean-Bound Plastic via Packaging Digest For plastic litter, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of recovery. That describes the notion of diverting ocean-bound plastic by collecting plastic bottles before they ever reach the water. The latest bottle brand to wade into the greener waters of preventive sustainability is Chlorophyll Water, a uniquely formulated, green-colored functional water. With the brand’s new partnership with rePurpose Global, the sale of each bottle supports the diversion of the the equivalent of one ocean-bound plastic bottle.
