📄💡Unleashing a Research Agenda for the EU Mission Climate Neutral and Smart Cities! This exciting first of its kind event brought together researchers from across Europe, held during the 2024 edition of the Cities Mission Conference on 25 June. The goals of this event were: - To outline the research aspects of #MissionCities' pilot activities; - To reconnect research with local practitioners in Mission Cities; - To identify current research challenges and gaps in the journey towards climate neutrality. Ambition doesn't come out of nowhere. Most of the #MissionCities striving for climate neutrality by 2030 are long-standing members of the Covenant of Mayors, building on their well-established Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans. A short recap of the presentations during: Unleashing a Research Agenda for the EU Mission: #ClimateNeutral and #Smart #Cities.   💡 What is a #systemicapproach, how do systems operate and what is their impact? Marcelo Masera (CLICC) looked at how changes in one domain affects other domains (e.g. Governance, economics, …). Christos Vlachokostas (NEUTRON project) showed the impact of sustainable energy systems on social cohesion, economic development and environmental quality. Oleksandr Hrytsyn introduced a systemic innovation to transform Rivne's energy system. Here multiple levers of change (e.g. technology, governance and policies, social innovation) were looked at. Erin Cooper (UPPER) mapped the wider outcomes and impacts of 80 implemented innovative measures that help to unleash the potential of public transport in Europe.   📈 What is the role of a systemic approach in #upscaling. Cristiana Croitoru (UrbanWISE) looked at the social (changes in behavior), spatial and administrative (capacity building) layers of urban development. The data and lessons learned can help to scale up sustainable projects. Eloïse Deshayes showed how UP2030, by learning from neighborhood pilots and developing guidelines, aims to accelerate the implementation pace in cities and upscale solutions responding to climate emergencies. Corinne van Voorden introduced how knowledge institutes collaborate in collecting information, integrate knowledge and upscale and align it with (inter)national programs. Katarzyna Rędzińska talked about the Polish CapaCITIES program and how it aims to scale from Mission to other cities by synergy of national and regional instruments and tools.    🏛 How to enhance the systemic approach in #governance. Saveria Olga Murielle Boulanger (Let'sGOv) stated that the currently used one sector and one level approaches are hurdles to overcome and showed how, by exploring enhanced governance models, energy system-related emissions can be reduced. Jaime Moreno Serna (URBANEW) showed how cities can collectively exchange and learn from and be empowered (creating one voice towards the state) while implementing a massive retrofitting of residential buildings. Lena Neij introduced the open academy, a knowledge platform that will support Malmö, Helsingborg and Lund to reach their goal in developing transformative capacity.   👫 How to engage with #citizens? Laura Lütkes illustrated how the CoLAB Project provided a platform to connect to city to citizens. On the platform they can calculate their footprint and look at and support measures. Alessandro Deserti (DESIRE) looked at how innovative policy making can support a desirable rather than an “acceptable” sustainability transition.   💲 #Funding is key for measures to take place. Marcus Lindeberg Goñi looked at funding gaps between the overarching money for climate actions and the funding of the specific needed investments.   Thank you all and looking forward to the next step!   Some project links below.
