Menopause Mondays 🍷 Alcohol consumption during menopause can have an impact on brain health. While moderate alcohol intake may have some cardiovascular benefits for postmenopausal women, heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and other brain-related health issues. 🍷 A study published in the journal Menopause found that women who drank heavily during menopause had lower cognitive function scores compared to women who didn't drink alcohol. 🍷 According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, women should limit their alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day. This is because in addition to cognitive decline, excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of breast cancer, liver disease, and other health issues. 🍷 Alcohol can also interfere with sleep, which can negatively impact brain health. This week the menopause community is all talking about a newly approved prescribable option to add to our toolbox. 💊Veoza is a tablet that doesn’t contain hormones but blocks neurokinin B receptors in the part of the brain that controls vasomotor symptoms (VMS). 💊It will be launched officially in the new year. Initially it will only be available in the private sector. As yet, the price is likely to be considerably LESS than the cost in the U.S (but still considerably MORE than HRT). 💊 In published clinical trials to date Veoza shows a significant reduction in the frequency & severity of VMS. In a trial about to be published it also shows an improvement in sleep. Sleep is a crucial determinant of health. 💊We know that HRT is the most effective way of managing a large range of menopausal symptoms & for those using it for that reason, there is also good data supporting its ability to reduce future adverse health outcomes (eg heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes). Veoza has a much narrower target. 💊However, there are some people in whom, for medical reasons, there is a lack of clarity about the risk:benefit ratio of HRT - one of the main groups being those with a history of breast cancer. There are also those who have tried HRT & not got on with it OR who are simply averse to trying HRT. Here is the crux of the matter for me: I believe Veoza should be an option for all of these groups AS LONG AS the pros & cons are fully explained. 💊 As with all new drugs that come to the market there are things that have been rigorously tested and things that haven’t. Using these medications in the real world will tell us so more more over time. 💊 At the moment the only non-hormonal option for menopause symptoms is clonidine & that is really not a good option for the majority.
