Attention: Social Science Graduates! "WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH THIS DEGREE?!!!!!!!!!" I wondered the same thing back in 2012. Back then I was using my Post-911 Bill money to earn what I always wanted, a degree in anthropology. #IndianaJones led me there, but that's a story for another day. The problem that I was facing with that anth degree in hand was this: What career can I build with a social science degree? And, I wasn't the only one. In fact, during my internship with the American Anthropological Association I was tasked with researching all of the possible careers that anth majors could pursue. What I found was they had two viable options: 1) Become a tenured professor at a university 2) Take it to the "real world" For myself, I chose the real world. I decided to put my training as a #cultural anthropologist and apply to my other love, #storytelling. That was when Vicar Studios was born. I believed that if I applied social science methodology to creative then I would create better social marketing practices. It made sense to me then, and it has only been more true today. This purpose of this post is to let the other social science majors out there know that you can take what you learned in college and apply it to making your other passions so much better. This semester, I am fortunate to have an internship at the new Research Collective, created in collaboration with the Civil Dialogue Project and the Center for Civic Engagement at Binghamton University.  My role at this internship is the "Sociology Researcher," I am looking at major theoretical principles in sociology and considering which are the most important when discussing attempts to solve complex social problems. The main objective of the internship is to justify whether or not different major theoretical principles present in various disciplines are relevant to complex social problem-solving. I will gain experience in qualitative research, such as content analysis and literature review. I will also be developing professional skills such as public speaking, teamwork, critical thinking, and the practical application of theory. My most important goal is to apply the clear and practical communication skills I gain to various interpersonal and public situations.

During this dynamic activity, anthropology students stepped into the role of project developers, facing the challenge of creating impactful projects within tight budgets and timelines. The projects were divided into three dimensions: Economic, Environmental, and Social. 🔈 Laya Pattaravatin, Knowledge Management Analyst from The Mae Fah Luang Foundation, highlighted the significance of dialogue and collaboration in finding innovative solutions. The 2030 SDGs Game not only entertained but also empowered students with practical skills essential for navigating real-world challenges. 🔈 Panuwat Pinthong, a first-year anthropology student, shared insights gained from the activity, emphasizing the fusion of entertainment with newfound knowledge and skills. Negotiating under pressure and managing diverse situations fostered critical thinking and decision-making capabilities. Beyond the game, students connected SDGs with pressing social issues, such as educational inequality, sparking thoughtful discussions and proposing solutions. This event played a crucial role in the broader initiative to enhance graduate skills, deepen cultural experiences, and promote a comprehensive understanding of the SDGs. Completed my final exams and signed out of Obafemi Awolowo University. Thanks to the incessant strikes and breaks, it only took me an extra two years to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Anthropology. It wasn't an easy journey, but I am proud of the process because the person I am now is definitely not the person I was before. I learned a lot of lessons about life. I learned, unlearned, and relearned. I can particularly say that I am proud of the mental discipline and self-improvement I have developed over the years. I am grateful for all the people I met and the lives I had the opportunity to impact. I have learned to trust the process, not compare myself to others, forgive myself for letting my potential sleep, and forgive myself for holding back on the value I have to offer. Of course, it only gets better from here. As I cross one bridge, I reach another. I remain intentional about bringing out the best in me and being a person of value to others. I am currently open to opportunities for career growth, personal development, and nurturing my leadership skills. P.S : Some of you may recognize me as one of the partakers of the Haoma Worgwu LinkedIn Challenge who suddenly vanished for a year, while I might be a complete stranger to some.
