It is my 10 year anniversary at AkzoNobel 🎉. In the picture you see me visiting one of our factories in my first year at the company. You can see how excited I was and to be honest; I still am. It is a totally different company now and I have recently been appointed Director External Affairs. Change is a given in this company. It’s funny to see the difference in how people respond to my anniversary. From baby boomers I got: “Good start, but still a long way to go to 67” 😅 My generation, gen X, mostly say: “Well done! Do you still have growth opportunities? If not, it’s time to switch…” 🤔 Millennials are more of a mixed bag with some saying the same as gen X, but also: “How did you manage that? Aren’t you missing out on pay raises and new surroundings?” 😏 From gen Z: “Why…??” ☺️ And they are all right! So why did I stay? The five most important reasons for me: 1. It is an amazing company with amazing products. I genuinely feel it is a goldmine of opportunities 2. ⁠I love my job and get the to practice it for a listed multinational 3. ⁠There are amazing people in every part of the company and I have an amazing team 4. ⁠Covid happend to the world and made me stay longer than my normal five year span; which made me realize that it’s easy to leave and start over after five years, but you develop a whole new skill set by staying and work through many transformations 5. But we will not rest on our laurels. In an industry that is characterized by a fast pace and internationality, new challenges and issues are constantly arising. When I was working in my engineering career, I didn’t feel like I was living my purpose. I didn’t feel fulfilled. 😞 What I didn’t really realize at the time is… 💫 Every day, we’re all living part of our purpose. I believe we have both small purposes and big purposes. Example - I happened to grab a handful of napkins at an airport Starbucks. On the plane, I sat across the aisle from a woman who spilled her drink all over herself. Being at that place, at that time, with a handful of napkins to help her was part of my purpose. Lending a helping hand. Making someone’s day a little brighter. Small purposes. A couple years after leaving engineering, I read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. And I realized part of my bigger purpose. Engineering – an unsuitable career for me. Stressed out for years. Miserable. Feeling like a victim of my circumstances. Those years were NOT accidental. They had meaning. *They* were part of my purpose. All those years, all those experiences… 🧩They were merely pieces of the bigger picture. It was never about me! I was being positioned to help other women who struggle with challenges similar to those I’d faced. Changing the lives of many. Big purposes. 🌟 YOU are living part of your purpose every day. One year ago, I joined Tate and Lyle as a Scientist within the Technical Service team. Everything about this transition and period was new. I moved to a new state, just became a dad, the company was different from all other companies that I have worked with previously, and the role was totally different from my previous roles. As a result, the last year has come with some valuable lessons both personally and professionally. I thought I'd share some of them with you. ☑️ Knowing how to solve problems becomes important when you don't have answers right away. Sometimes, it's not the number of solutions you have in your head that matters; what matters is mastering the art of figuring out what you don't know but need to know. The smartest people in the world don't know it all; their genius lies in their ability to use material, mental, data, and human resources around them to address any challenges they are facing. ☑️ You will know that you are in a good work environment when you can say both "Happy Friday" and "Happy Monday". This is so because you are surrounded with positive and enthusiastic people that show up each day to contribute their best efforts to the business and support one another. ☑️ I started thinking about personal branding a while ago, and I noticed that there were quite a number of motivations or reasons why people want to build a personal brand. I needed to find my own motivation for building a personal brand. To be honest, I haven't figured it out completely. But one thing I keep telling myself as I continue the journey is that 'if I focus on adding value above all else; somehow, and somewhere along the line, value will come back to me'. ☑️ You've got nothing to lose. Opportunities are constantly on the move - here today, gone tomorrow. Seize the chances that come your way, even if you're feeling underqualified. Last Friday we had the celebration of Mother’s Day in Hyperion Materials & Technologies Mexico Site, it was a memorable date, and it is highly important for our culture. Continuing with our engagement initiatives, for the first time, both blue collar and white-collar moms were reunited to celebrate together this special day.    It was a great celebration; we were also fortunate to have different visitors from other sites and share our traditions, such as Youjia Liu (Director Operational Excellence), Govin Krishnan (Product Manager), Dana Kaminski (Customer Experience Manager), Nemesio Pérez (Application Engineer), they were at Mexico Site for a Kaizen event in their respective areas.   The Committee CCIH, where I have the honor to be a member, decided to join efforts together with the Labor Union and celebrate with a traditional Mariachi to add that happiness and Mexican unique touch that characterizes us so much as culture.   Especially in my case, seeing so many colleagues enjoying, dancing, and experiencing Mariachis for the first time in their lives with no doubt is the best satisfaction that feels my heart and my soul.   My grandmother used to tell me: “Life is made of moments”, I can add: “Life is made of moments and in special like those of that day, all of us should enjoy and live them as much as we can.   So, for me Mariachis are what I call small, big details, that make the difference. I think this type of initiatives help us to unite as a team, as a Company, as human beings who have a life story and a motivation to give the best of ourselves in any area of our lives. Youjia L.
