We are in election mode already, with announcements and signals from some part of our great state almost every day of the week. The ABC’s Antony Green pointed out recently that ‘the political geography of Queensland for state elections is that Labor must hold seats in regional cities along the state’s coast to win a majority.’ This would seemingly include Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, and Bundaberg seats. Theoretically, there are not enough seats in inner-city Brisbane to compensate for missing out on victories in regional cities in this scenario. The battlegrounds for 2024 would therefore normally be two-pronged: up north and inner Brisbane (where the Greens could play an interesting role). Everywhere else is usually pretty well accounted for. However, the recent by-election swings have introduced a significant element of unpredictability. These swings, could potentially move the safely contested seats, as they did in 2012 and again in 2015, and were among the biggest in electoral history! One went the way of the LNP, and one went back to Labor. Current polling suggests the former is most likely on this occasion, but there is still a long way to go, and as Elle Goulding likes to remind us, ‘ Anything could happen!’. At Q Shelter we’ll be talking to anyone aspiring to political office, that has an interest in continuing to solve for our #Housing and #Homelessness challenges. Devolution works best when politicians put place before party. That's the message Kevin Whitmore shares in his piece for The Developer. By the end of 2024, a majority of people living in England will be represented by an elected mayor for the first time. And it's been 10 years since the first devolution deals were drawn. How's it going? Centralised government couldn't be more unpopular, but is devolution delivering for local communities in terms of transport, housing and prosperity? The picture is not uniform because the mayoralties are not uniform in terms of their powers. Whitmore shares that the new Trailblazer deals signed with Greater Manchester and the West Midlands will see additional powers granted to the mayors. And it could be this greater autonomy leads to greater prosperity. With Greater Manchester and the West Midlands able to retain the business rates for another decade, Whitmore believes the place-based approach to development will continue to deliver economic growth. But as with central government, it's cross-party consensus and commitment to long-term strategy that's needed to deliver meaningful things that take more than 4 years – such as housing, retrofit, climate resilience, action on homelessness, infrastructure, transport initiatives, tackling deprivation and social issues.
