Africa stands at the crossroads of two global crises: climate change and biodiversity loss. These intertwined challenges threaten the continent's rich ecosystems and diverse wildlife, while also imperiling the livelihoods and cultures of millions. From the expanding Sahara to the shrinking rainforests, Africa's landscapes are transforming rapidly. Indigenous communities, often at the forefront of conservation, face displacement and loss of traditional knowledge. Yet, amidst these challenges, African nations are pioneering innovative solutions, blending traditional wisdom with modern science to protect both people and nature in this critical fight for survival. Climate change is increasing the risk of drought, flooding, tropical storms, sea level rise, and desertification in Africa—and many countries and communities don’t have the resources they need to adapt. But Africa’s natural resources can protect our planet and combat these effects. “Africa’s vast landscapes, unparalleled biodiversity, and existing carbon sinks are natural assets that deliver enormous benefits to the planet and humanity as a whole,” says IFAW Climate Change Advisor, Simon Addison. “They essentially provide a planetary safety net.” IFAW’s holistic, landscape-based approach to biodiversity conservation aims to protect this safety net—creating climate-resilient landscapes where animals and people can thrive together. Think catastrophic biodiversity loss across virtually every ecosystem on earth - from tropical marine reefs and temperate rainforests to high montane or tundra grasslands. Think catastrophic natural disasters off the spectrum ~ Fires, Floods, Mudslides/Avalanches, Tornados, Hurricanes and the associated financial cost impacts to man-made structures and livelihoods. Think forced migration and temperature/climate impacted refugee crises on a scale yet to comprehend and which politicians will not be able to stop. We are currently seeing headlines that the world's first year-long breach of key 1.5 Degree Celsius warming limit has been recorded. 🌍Whilst #ClimateChange is a global phenomenon, its effects are unfairly distributed. Asian, African, and Latin American countries with less developed economies endure the most dire consequences, all the while being the least responsible for the state of the climate. 💡We know that nature-based solutions (NbS) can improve #ClimateResilience and #EnvironmentalProtection. 🌱 The IUCN's first global assessment of mangrove ecosystems using the Red List of Ecosystems reveals alarming findings: 50% of these vital ecosystems are at risk of collapse. Covering about 150,000 km² globally, mangroves are crucial for biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and local livelihoods. Yesterday marked World Environment Day 2024. This year's theme is “Accelerating Land Restoration, Drought Resilience, and Desertification Progress." The land provides us with a wealth of global opportunities. According to the UN’s environment program, we can generate up to $30 in ecosystem services for every dollar invested in restoration. By restoring the land, we can improve livelihoods, increase biodiversity, increase the resilience of our communities to extreme weather, and slow down climate change. However, effectively preventing land degradation, drought, and desertification requires change. In support of this, countries have pledged to restore one billion hectares, In line with this year’s theme. A worldwide commitment offers us genuine hope that we can safeguard the environment, meet restoration targets, and enhance the lives of billions of people. I'm delighted to share that I have completed the "Cities and Climate Change" course by UN-Habitat! This comprehensive program offered by UN-Habitat and the corresponding UN agencies, has equipped me with in-depth knowledge and expertise to address the complex challenges of urbanization and climate change. Climate change like flooding, drought, excessive rain, and extreme heat is continuously affecting humans and other species worldwide. So we have to adopt environmentally friendly measures to overcome these effects. Governments should follow the UN adaptation plan as by adopting this plan, governments can: - Protect vulnerable communities from climate-related disasters - Foster sustainable economic growth and development - Ensure water and food security - Support biodiversity conservation I urge governments to prioritize the UN Adaptation Plan and work collaboratively to address the climate crisis.
