Some people are inspired by the impact of their work on society and the planet, and their families and future generations that they care about. Some are inspired by the beauty, diversity, and resilience of nature, which we have to appreciate and protect. Some are inspired by the passion and enthusiasm of their colleagues and peers in working together to create a better future. Others are inspired by the positive stories and feedback of their stakeholders and beneficiaries. These are the things that fuel our fire and keep us going. ‘’Is it more beneficial to my career to become a sustainability specialist or a generalist?’’ This is a question I hear regularly, and the answer isn't as simple as it might seem… On one hand, specialists are those who dive deep into a specific area, becoming the go-to experts. With the increased specialization in topics such as reporting with CSRD, or nature and biodiversity with TNFD, these roles are becoming increasingly in demand. If you love becoming an expert in one area and driving innovation within it, specializing might be your path. On the other hand, generalists have a broader understanding across various aspects of sustainability. They’re often the ones who can connect the dots, think about the bigger picture, and are also often brought in for short-term projects or to fill diverse roles. If you're someone who enjoys exploring multiple areas and adapting to different roles, being a generalist could open up more opportunities for you. What’s interesting is that the sustainability sector is constantly evolving, and both generalists and specialists are in demand. Recently, I’ve noticed that companies are increasingly looking for individuals who can bring a bit of both to the table—specialists who can step back and see the wider context, and generalists who aren’t afraid to dig deep when necessary. So, what's my advice? Focus on where your passion lies and how you want to make an impact! There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but by staying adaptable and continuously learning, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate your sustainability career, whether you choose to specialize or generalize. #sustainability #sustainabilitycareers #gs2
