My cover piece for Business India's recent annual edition ( includes ranking) on B-schools... A couple of quick points. Premier B-schools are keeping a close eye on the digital disruptions in the marketplace which are slated to significantly change the employment equations in a medium to long run scenario. They are trying to align with this as the advent of AI and other forms of disruptions entail change in the rules to prepare future managers and leaders. The second major point is the new direction set by the New Education Policy, 2020. It would entail institutes to become multi-disciplinary units, stand alone institutes ( 70 percent of over 3000 MBA institutes belong to this category) to scale up and become universities or become part of a higher education cluster over the next one decade. This would need fresh capital infusion ( in faculty management, research and development, etc) and it would not be easier for majority of the institutes. These equations are slated to make the current decade a period of intense churning for the higher education institutes including B-schools. By the way, the campus placement drive this session has been relatively slow ( till mid-December). The equation of 'Education' has changed so much. What started from here has the potential to come back with a bang. The legacy which was created by the Indian education system dates back to ancient times. The Gurukul system, where students lived with their teachers and received holistic education, was one of the earliest forms of organized education. This system laid the foundation for the teacher-student relationship and the importance of mentorship, which has influenced education worldwide. Fast forward this to today...#India has taken several leaps on many areas and the same can also happen with #HigherEducation Why do students who look up to getting their education at various international destinations: - They have gamification and digital learning pedagogy well established - Research is being given a lot of importance and the same is also valued across various strata of life - Partnerships across the board adds to holistic education for the students and makes their foundation strong - They have funds not only to drive education but also to support students with scholarships - Faculty development and their training to be in tune with the times is extremely high - The exposure level and opportunities are incredibly strong enough to give a great headstart. Now, the key question is...don't we have these things in our country? The answer is we do...however not at the scale at which these are needed. Our #Universities have to move beyond just imparting degrees and professionals needs to be onboarded into their structure to ensure that real life scenarios and simulations becomes meaningful. India is known for its size and that's brings in immense scope to do social initiatives and that too at scale. These have to be instilled with the Mentor-Mentee structure deeply embedded as part of the cultural ethos. The concept of Alumni network and its importance is largely visible in the crème de la crème however missing in the others.
