Here’s a great combo of exercises for athletes and coaches looking to add a little bit of variety into their warm-up. It’s a forward lunge with an emphasis on a long stride for hip mobility. The overhead throw is a nice way to warm up the upper body and also sneak and some anti-extension for the trunk. The isometric hold at the bottom focuses on strength and control in a deeper range of motion. The last piece of the lunge is when you focus on pushing through your front leg back to the standing position. This requires significant of concentric strength, control and balance. We suggest performing 2 to 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps. Having spent a numbers of years training for the Olympic lifts and coaching numerous athletes through them, here’s my take on them. Olympic lifts and their derivatives are a great way to develop rate of force development aka explosive power for the hip and knee extensors, which is the ability to produce high forces in short time frames. And is critical for sports that involve jumping and sprinting, among others. However, the caveat is that they’re not for everyone. You need a high level of technical mastery to perform them with the required load to drive an adaptive response. Making it fun, by allowing the athlete to explore the environment and assess how they develop through the attractor landscape. Here we are using the trampoline to create greater compression forces, seeing how the athlete creates stiffness and reduces muscle slack. Does this guy need more bench press? I doubt it… The development of speed is the same! Being strong doesn’t make you fast. It doesn’t even make you in shape for being fast. Let alone being successful on the field of play. 🚀Why? Because traditional strength training fails to address the motor capacity of speed ravaged tasks. ❌The mistake! Team sport athletes like rugby players get away with “being strong” and not developing specific speed qualities due to the amount of running they do in their sport practice. This creates some degree of transfer but fails on many areas. 💙 How to improve? Reduce traditional strength training to 20% of the year and then replace with special exercises to improve specific work capacity and tissue tolerance to optimise performance. #speedtraining #rugbytraining #strengthandconditioning #specialstrength
