Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, a world leader in the effort to find a cure for Parkinson's disease, Griffin Catalyst supported a new global competition to incentivize research groups to visualize the alpha-synuclein protein in living Parkinson's patients. Present in nearly all six million people with Parkinson’s, this misfolded protein, located in certain parts of the brain, is believed to be a key factor in understanding the disease's pathology. The success of this competition is ushering in the next phase of research for these new imaging tracers, a major step towards developing tools to understand, treat, and eventually cure Parkinson's disease. Experts are discussing the potential of microscopic robots constructed from a patient's cells, which could have a transformative impact on healthcare. In lab experiments, these "anthrobots" have shown promise in repairing damaged brain tissue. Imagine the possibilities: These tiny robots could address issues like clogged arteries, spinal cord damage, or retina damage and even deliver medications precisely where needed, such as cancer treatment sites. What's particularly noteworthy is that these robots are created from a patient's own cells, reducing the risk of rejection by the body. Researchers at Tufts University repurposed trachea cells, equipping them with tiny hairs, or cilia, to enable movement. When introduced to damaged human nerve cells, these microbots initiated the healing process by forming a "superbot." Thank you to the NIH SPARC Program and the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, University of Minnesota for asking me to give this recorded talk to outline recent findings about the neural pathways presumed responsible for vagus nerve stimulation benefits across a variety of therapeutic indications, and how the neuroanatomy responsible for limiting side effects differs between surgical implanted epineural cuffs (iVNS), transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS), and transcutaneous auricular vagus stimulation (taVNS). As we can't see the electric field applied, understanding the physics of each neural interface and the neuroanatomy responsible for the side effects reported is a key tool in understanding what pathways you are activating for each modality in each patient. It's really important to connect what we are learning across therapeutic indications and VNS modalities; the dosing appears more complex than we originally assumed and we have a lot to learn from each other. I'm hoping this talk can start a conversation so we all can improve the scientific rigor in our studies of iVNS, tcVNS and taVNS and ultimately help more patients. https://lnkd.in/d3vzJ9K7

Our team of researchers at Bi/ond successfully created 𝟯𝗗 𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. ☝ June 21st is the Global ALS/MND Awareness Day. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (#ALS) is still a devastating disease with limited treatment options. Failures in previous #clinical_trials may also be due to the fact that we are including a heterogeneous group of patients and treating all the same way. Recent work from the #MAXOMOD consortium published in Nature Communications highlights that ALS is different in males in females and that there are molecular #subgroups that could require different #therapies. I am incredibly thankful to the wonderful collaborators on this journey that started as an #E_Rare-funded project back in 2018: Stefan Bonn, Valentina Bonetto, Christine Carapito, Jeroen Pasterkamp, Magdalena Kuzma-Kozakiewicz, Ralph Schlapbach and their dedicated and hard-working teams.
