How to write a product strategy in 1 hourโ€ฆ (or 1 day / week / month โ€ฆ ) "๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜ซ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ, ๐˜ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข ๐˜š๐˜ž๐˜ˆ๐˜Ž (๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ-๐˜ˆ๐˜ด๐˜ด ๐˜Ž๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด) ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ต ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜บ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฌ๐˜ด." - Gibson Biddle, ex Netflix, Chegg Strategies are never done. There are just times when they need to feel complete so you communicate them (e.g All hands / quarter start / product review). How detailed your strategy is depends on how much time you have before you need to communicate it. Having a 1 hour strategy is useful, because: โ€ข It gives you something that other people can react to and build on โ€ข You realise where you have most uncertainty and need to do more work โ€ข It is likely 80% the same as a 2 week strategy, which is 80% as the same as a 2 month strategy You can document this in Google Doc / Notion / whatever. Hey Ed Biden this is really helpful. In the detailed presentation, there is content on resource allocation or maybe investment portfolio themes. In your experience that discussion overlaps with which of the above 7 discussion points? It sounds like that is a bet that needs some validation. Am I interpreting this correctly?

Crafting a product strategy requires a structured approach. The elements you mentioned are indeed very well structured. Ed Biden

This is a great approach - simple yet clear. Fully agree that thinking about the users so early on is crucial during strategy setting. The challenge I constantly face is that the persona does change as discovery continues - this is not a bad thing but it does mean needing to redefine the superpowers / vision / pillars etc This is feasible when company is small and nimble but quite a headache when the org is sizeable with multiple products in the portfolio and is โ€˜slow to turnโ€™. Do you have any tips on how to iterate between the 1 hour / 2 week / 2 month without it seemingly like a reinvention every time that annoys the teams especially after it has been initially communicated?

Writing a strategy in one hour? Did you account for the time needed to develop the background knowledge- customers, competition, problem space, etc. before formulating an objective. The background development process is time-consuming unless you are doing a fun exercise to write a strategy doc for the sake of writing (not formulating) one. Donโ€™t recommend following a swag approach to look like a dumb infront of stakeholders and deplete their likelihood to trust you if you just joined a new team.

This is good. Iโ€™d start w vision and currently on a mission to evolve the word roadmap to feature pipeline, frontend that with opportunity tree or map tied to biz goals, and for b2b users needs expansion into a target market segmentation, needs some view of status quo and pain, but agree w the skeleton and the drive to do fuzzy quick then add fidelity over time. I like some of the updated more inspiring language too. Superpowers vs differentiators.

Two things I particularly appreciate about this post Ed Biden... First, that you state so clearly that strategies are never done. And, second that you've suggested a 1-hour time box. So many people get caught up in building strategy behind close doors and miss crucial execution time. Also, given where my focus is, I'm curious to know who's incorporating AI into their vision and strategy processes...?

Thanks Ed for the continued valuable posts! A lot of people overcomplicate strategy (and get into framework lock) when following first principles usually can get you where you want more quickly. I especially like the Pillars - they help significantly with making fast decisions down the road (โ€œshould we do A or Bโ€).

Hey Ed! Dig this. How do you manage keeping track of the problem to be solved, and also continuously testing the validity of that problem? Are those constraints woven throughout? Cheers! Thank you for sharing this.
