Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), released a report on the global #chip supply chain that projects the United States will triple its domestic #semiconductor manufacturing capacity from 2022—when the CHIPS and Science Act (CHIPS) was enacted—to 2032. The projected 203% growth is the largest projected percent increase in the world over that time. While the report finds investments from the industry—facilitated by CHIPS incentives—are on track to reinvigorate semiconductor manufacturing in America and reinforce U.S. chip supply chains, it also identifies policy actions that will further strengthen supply chains, support R&D and chip design, grow the semiconductor workforce, and ensure CHIPS delivers maximum benefits to America’s economic and national security.

Semiconductor equipment 3 giants set up high-end R&D centers in Taiwan In a significant development, the Ministry of Economy has highlighted Taiwan’s growing prowess in the semiconductor industry, drawing attention to the presence of the world’s top three semiconductor equipment manufacturers – #ASML, Applied Materials #amat, and Lam Research.#lrcx Lam Research #lrcx, a key player in the semiconductor equipment sector, recently unveiled plans for an advanced node and advanced process technology research and development center in Taiwan. This move underscores Taiwan’s appeal as a strategic location for cutting-edge research and innovation. The influx of these major players has not only elevated Taiwan’s global standing but has also spurred a remarkable investment surge. Three major factories have established high-end R&D centers, injecting a substantial 433.7 billion yuan into the Taiwanese economy. Taiwan has now emerged as the world leader in R&D density for semiconductor equipment. This achievement is testament to the nation’s commitment to fostering technological advancements and becoming a nucleus for innovation in the semiconductor space. Over the past five years, the Ministry of Economy has facilitated substantial investment, with nearly NT$6.5 billion dedicated to subsidizing the domestic equipment and materials industry. This strategic investment aims to propel Taiwan to the forefront of semiconductor technology and solidify its position as a global hub for innovation. The government’s commitment extends beyond attracting international giants. The Ministry of Economy is actively supporting domestic semiconductor equipment and materials by channeling funds through the Technology Department and the Department of Development. This support aims to encourage independent technology research and development, ensuring that domestic players meet the stringent quality and reliability standards set by semiconductor manufacturing leaders such as TSMC, Riyueguang, and Unipower. The Finnish semiconductor industry is growing rapidly and is poised to triple its turnover to EUR 5–6 billion and expand its workforce to 20,000 by 2035. Semiconductor Branch Group at Teknologiateollisuus - Technology Industries of Finland has today launched 'Chips from the North' industry’s strategy to support this growth. Strategy encourages businesses and the government to invest in education, attract international talent and investments, and enhance research and development within the sector. The strategy outlines six pivotal areas for expansion in the Finnish semiconductor industry: ✔ chip design ✔ microelectromechanical systems and sensor technology ✔ photonics ✔ quantum technologies ✔ advanced materials ✔ sustainable process technologies. ”This strategy gives excellent framework to continue the growth of Finnish semiconductor industry and ecosystem.” says Okmetic’s Research and Development Director Heikki Holmberg. While Bangladesh faces challenges like infrastructure, skilled labor, and investment in this sector, industry experts believe the country should focus on leveraging its comparative advantage in chip design due to lower labor costs and gradually developing a skilled workforce and capabilities in more advanced stages of the semiconductor value chain.

Despite challenges faced last year, Taiwan's IC industry is showing resilience and adaptability. In 2021, the IC industry production value in Taiwan experienced a decline of 10.2%, amounting to $139.2 billion, as reported by the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center.
