A very insightful discussion on the role of the R&I in the energy intensive industries during the EU R&I Days 2024! Bringing the national level experience from Austria, Henriette Spyra highlighted the need for integration of R&I results and cooperation: cross-sectorial actors, public and private sector, national and international levels need to meaningfully engage. “Not being successful is not an option. We must manage to be decarbonised without being de-industrialised. We should see it as a race, a race for the future.” The industrial side was represented by Ilse Kenis, Carmeuse Technologies, who not only highlighted the specificities in the decarbonisation of the lime sector, including the link to carbon capture/sequestration, but also the importance of accelerating the scale up of the results of R&I projects for reaching the Green Deal objectives. “Innovation is stepping up to levels never seen in the past. Not only in product innovation but also process innovation.” Deputy Director General Signe Ratso reminded of the ongoing work by the European Commission on building a comprehensive approach to industrial transformation and R&I deployment, including via regulatory environment, projects within Horizon2020/Horizon Europe programmes and industrial partnerships. “The EU is building a comprehensive approach to boost industrial transformation toward climate neutral competitive industries for the future in line with the Green Deal Industrial Plan.” It was a pleasure to bring together such a great (and gender unbalanced) panel and listen to the expert views! Looking forward to further work on the R&I deployment agenda for decarbonisation of energy intensive industries. 

A big news day in CCS today. The Global CCS Institute's 2023 status report is out (link below). https://lnkd.in/eBR3mrBj Headline is a 48% increase in CO2 capture capacity in development to 361 million tonnes per annum. 198 new projects have been added to the development pipeline. The time is now for CCS. We really have hit a tipping point of development. If we want to keep 1.5 alive and get on track to hit the Paris Agreement goals we need to get to gigatonne scale of CCS by the 2030s. To bridge the global gap, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is co-sponsoring the Global Carbon Management Challenge, which is a collective of countries around the world getting together to set a gigatonne scale ambition. We'll all need to learn from one another to achieve this global ambition and the UK continues to support the effort. I'll be doing a webinar on the UK's experience in developing policy to incentivise investment in CCS on the 17th November, hosted by GCCSI. Here's the link to register. Yesterday’s ERC event focused on MATCHING ENERGY SUPPLY AND DEMAND FOR INDUSTRY. The ERC event offered valuable insights on existing and expected policies, gave practical examples. Here are some takeaways:   📌 In between energy supply and demand for industry is infrastructure. No transition without transmission. 📌 There is room for industry in North West Europe. But this means making political and societal choices. 📌Companies and network operators have different timelines for investment and do not always speak the same language. 📌The industrial cluster approach can help break through the chicken and egg dilemma about energy demand and network capacity. Cluster chairs can help in bringing parties together.  And finally: 📌Collaboration is important but transforming the energy system and transforming industry requires cocreation by different players along the energy value chain.
