What do you think? 🤔 Everytime I see a flooded highway or street, I immediately think about the importance of well-designed storm water management systems in our communities. What pipe size did they use, for example, and who designed it? When was the last time it was cleaned? This would be important data to track, don’t you think? Years ago, I was involved in a sewer project where the city used undersized storm pipes to meet budget constraints. A 72-hour blizzard that featured more than 100 centimetres of snow in some areas, knocked out power for thousands, blanketed roads and highways, and closed schools and businesses. The winter storm which lasted from Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, hit eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton the hardest with a heavy, persistent snowfall, mixed with gusting winds. During a media briefing on Feb. 5 in Halifax, Premier Tim Houston called the snowstorm “historic.” To those who had not had their roads plowed, Houston appealed for patience. The premier said his government is doing “everything possible” to clear roads, including moving resources to the most impacted areas and appealing to neighbouring provinces. Mark Peachey, Chief Engineer with the Department Public Works said the need for road clearing operations on this scale hasn’t been seen since White Juan in 2004.  At the moment, Peachy said 20 public works vehicles are out of service. He said having five per cent of its fleet out of operation is “higher than normal,” noting the crews are reporting snow drifts eight to 10 feet high. After speaking with Cape Breton-Canso MP Mike Kelloway, Sydney-Victoria MP Jamie Battiste, and Cape Breton Regional Municipal Mayor Amanda McDougall, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Feb. 4 that his government is “here to help however we can.” Houston said the province has requested snow removal equipment, portable fuel storage, and air transport from the federal government. Pointing to the thousands of Nova Scotia customers without power, the premier said there were more than 100 crews out working to restore service. Nova Scotia Power Storm Lead Matt Drover said the “massive amount of snow” is preventing access to some of its infrastructure. Noting that EHS responded to over 500 calls on Feb. 4, and another 300 at the time of the briefing, Houston said it’s important to call 911. In the August 7, 2024, online issue of The Wall Street Journal, the Journal published a video story about the MTA's need to add $ 1 billion to its prior $7.6 billion investment in reducing subway flooding. Over the last several days, we have had multiple violent thunderstorms and periods of heavy rainfall. These are neither the result of hurricanes or tropical storms. They are just the result of increasingly frequent heavy concentrations of rain. Subway riders experience large amounts of standing water. The media and politicians like to talk about storm surges and sea level rise because these events are more frightening, they occur rapidly and they produce striking visual images. But many flooding events are quite a distance inland. They result from building infrastructure in low-lying areas and failing to invest sufficiently in flood control systems, and they are triggered by rainfall, not tidal water flows. This is not just a Florida or coastal problem. It exists everywhere in America in which we have underinvested in infrastructure. Excessive stormwater runoff results from poor drainage infrastructure. The rainwater that flows from higher to lower ground because it cannot get absorbed into the soil and does not evaporate collects all sorts of material that can be harmful to plants, flowers, trees and small animals in our ecosystems. While many Northern and Midwestern Americans like to talk negatively about Florida and other coastal areas, far less of Florida's critical infrastructure was built underground, and much of its above-ground infrastructure has been hardened to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. Communities away from the coasts need to invest in making infrastructure more resilient against a particular climate change risk: more frequent intense rainfalls.

What threat does #climatechange pose to #infrastructure for those on #bikes and other #micromobility? If it’s in a floodplain, it is a big problem. More #globalwarming means more #flooding in some areas. In this case, the flooding is getting more frequent and damaging. The Riverwalk in the US city of #Columbus, Georgia, consists of a multiuser path built on top of a combined sewer system meant to reduce spills into the river. The path and the world’s longest urban whitewater course that’s adjacent to it are highly prized by local residents and the businesses that have tapped into their drawing potential. Planners have often targeted riverbanks and streambeds for bike paths because they were unobstructed due to their lack of suitability for #realestate development. Was this a mistake? LTSLR (long-term #SeaLevelRise) is a serious problem today and inexorably worsening with every passing moment. While serious #climate #mitigation would (will?) help reduce just how high the seas will get, the reality is that significant #slr is already baked in and almost nowhere are adequate resources (planning, policy, infrastructure, retreat) being invested to deal with even optimistic projections. As the West Coast atmospheric rivers continue to slam into Southern California, a well-used commuter and Amtrak rail line is once again cut in half by coastal erosion in San Clemente -- for the fifth time in just the last three years. I often rode the Pacific Surfliner from LA to San Diego to see a baseball game or enjoy the gaslamp quarter or walk the marina. It was always reliable and relaxing, and way better than driving. Commuters have it even worse: there's limited service and no bus substitution, which means more cars on the 5 and 405.
