Today is a good day: Lufthansa and the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit concluded a long-term collective agreement. The pilots who are organized in their union have accepted the proposal. This is the result of long, constructive, and demanding negotiations. It entails many good news: - The agreement provides additional operational reliability for our customers. - Lufthansa Airline has a sound planning foundation for the years ahead. - More growth will be possible as we can include the former Germanwings pilots into Lufthansa Airline. - And our pilots will receive salary increases as well as more plannable leisure time and roster stability. Though this agreement is not easy from an economic perspective, we can now plan ahead with up to 13 additional aircraft within the next 15 month. And it also strengthens our social partnership: though we couldn’t find answers to every open question, this is an important step for our future development. I am really happy about the new willingness to engage in dialogue. I am totally convinced that with this approach in which no side overburdens the other, we will also find solutions for the outstanding issues. Yet, I am happy that our cooperative and constructive way to solve problems pays off. This is a foundation upon which we can build our future. I know that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. We are working hard for more stability and a better product for our guests. ITA Needs Lufthansa - While Lufthansa Group Chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr remains optimistic a solution to integrating ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group will come, he made clear Lufthansa has its limits. “It’s not just about the fact that ITA has a future, it’s also about the fact that Italy, as the third-largest economy in the EU, needs its own connections to the world markets and can’t just be connected from outside. You can’t do this alone if you’re not part of a group,” Spohr said yesterday during the Q1 results call. “It’s also clear that it has to be worth it for us as well. So, there are red lines where it’s no longer worth it [to integrate ITA]. But I think we can find a solution within the red lines without having to cross them.” For Spohr there is no Plan B. “Let’s be honest, Lufthansa can live without ITA. The question is the other way around: can ITA live without Lufthansa? I think more and more observers agree that the answer is ‘no.’” This Italian airline deserve a future, he said, and it has a plan, which is the Lufthansa integration. Last week, the #ITAAirways-#Lufthansa deal was approved by the European Commission. I spoke to Andrea Giuricin to learn more about its impact on the long-haul front from #Italy. A few key takeaways: ✈️🌍 The key markets for ITA to focus on as the newest and Southernmost members of the LH Group include #LatinAmerica, #Africa and the #UnitedStates to an extent. ✈️🇮🇹 ITA will enable the LH Group to compete effectively against #airlines like #Iberia (IAG Group) on some of these markets, primarily Latin America. ✈️📉 ITA’s market share #domestically stands at ~25%, under #Ryanair with ~50%. SAS Scandinavian Airlines will add Atlanta to its US network in northern summer 2024, but will not resume two routes from secondary Scandinavian cities to New York Newark after launching them in 2023. It only operated the services from Aalborg (Denmark) and Gothenburg (Sweden) from Apr-2023 until the end of Oct-2023. However, the broader picture for SAS in the market between Scandinavia and the United States is looking fairly solid. Compared with 2019 – before the COVID-19 pandemic, and before the withdrawal of the low cost competitor Norwegian Air Shuttle from all three Scandinavia-US markets – SAS now has more capacity and a higher seat share. It has increased its focus on its hub in Copenhagen, making Denmark-US even more dominant in the Scandinavia-US market than it already was. Norse Atlantic Airways has only partially replaced Norwegian's capacity, and only in Norway-US.
