Most of us do not read our health plan materials and don't know how it works until we have a health situation (e.g., cancer diagnosis). That applies to everyone, at all ages, all over the world. So what can a health plan do to support their members throughout their health journey? Reach out to the member once the plan believes something might be happening (e.g., a new prescription drug claim which happen immediately). That outreach needs to be timely and cannot wait until there is official notification (e.g., medical claim with a diagnosis). Why? Because those claims can take 6 months or longer to hit the system and be processed. A cancer diagnosis can't wait 6 months or longer to hear from the member's health plan. The health plan must use effective digital tools (member portal and mobile app) to communicate in a timely manner. Dropping to mail after the plan receives a medical claim means the member, depending on which type of health plan they have, will not hear from their health plan for 9-12 months after the member spoke with their doctor. I can tell you after over 25 years in the industry, the member is NOT calling their health plan first. They are calling friends and family who have questions that the member cannot answer. This leads to fear and frustration. I can also lead recommendations and decisions that are not covered by the health plan. What if instead, the member received a text the same day the new prescription was filled offering their assistance and making the sure the member has what they need right now. The direction would vary based on the prescription. It could be as simple as "did you know" type of response. To be effective, a health plan needs to start with a Consumer Engagement strategy! It also starts with partnering with the right software partner who offers plug-and-play solutions that deliver results! With Mark Meiselbach, Jianhui (Frank) Xu, Ge Bai, and Gerard Anderson, our paper was published at Medical Care Research and Review. Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health This study examined within hospital price variation associated with commercial insurer's market power for shoppable care and emergency room services. Key finding 1: Commercial insurers with the largest market share consistently negotiated the lowest prices in the local market. Key finding 2: For radiology services and lab tests, increasing levels of insurer market power in the local market were consistently associated with additional price discounts. Key finding 3: For medical/surgical care, evaluation and management, and emergency room visits, prices from major national insurers who were not dominant in the local market were similar compared with those from smaller insurers, and cash-pay patients. #pricetransparency #healthinsurance #hospitals #healthcarecosts

Would you be willing to wait to get a tyre changed, or your brakes fixed? No... And for that reason, you might have: ☑ AA / Breakdown Cover ☑ Warranty 🛠 Regular Servicing But our health seems to be something different. The latest stats from Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has warned of an “impending crisis” in the cancer workforce, with a “staggering” 30% shortfall in radiologists and 15% shortfall in clinical oncologists. The report, based on responses from senior managers at 60 specialist cancer centres in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland featured on the BBC Health News section stated: 🔷 Managers at 47% of sites said patients needing chemotherapy and other cancer drugs were facing delays “most weeks or every week”, up from reports of delays at 28% of sites the previous year. 🔷 Centres reporting weekly delays to radiotherapy also nearly doubled, from 22% in 2022 to 43% in 2023. 😣 Almost all clinical directors surveyed said workforce shortages were causing backlogs. “𝑾𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒎 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝑯𝑺,” said RCR president Dr Katharine Halliday. For this reason, might now be a good time to consider a level of protection by investing in Private Medical Insurance? #PrivateMedical #MedicalInsurance #HealthChoices
