This past weekend, I watched the Beckham documentary, and I couldn't help but reflect on the remarkable parallels between his journey and the road to success in sales. 🏆⚽👨👩👧👦 Dedication and Work Ethic There's no substitute for hard work. Beckham's relentless pursuit of perfection in freekicks serves as a powerful reminder. In sales, just as on the field, success comes to those who invest the hours, continually learn, grow, and, most importantly, earn the rewards of their dedication. Embracing Failure Throughout his career, Beckham confronted numerous setbacks and relentless criticism. Yet, he never allowed his emotions to cloud his professionalism and ultimately earned England captaincy. In sales, we too face challenging weeks, months, or quarters, but it's crucial to embrace failure as an inevitable part of the journey. It's not about whether you encounter it but how you handle it and grow from it that truly matters. Family Support Beckham's journey was not a solitary one. He leaned on the unwavering support of his family during times of immense pressure and criticism. As the saying goes, "A problem shared is a problem halved." In both our personal lives and sales careers, the backing of a strong family provides a solid foundation that empowers us to tackle challenges head-on. The first time I met Michael Render aka Killer Mike was in 2016. . He and Bill Maher had just smoked a joint during a live taping of Real Time and after the show I got to say hello to him and his gorgeous wife, Shay. . Soon after I heard him put two words together that became the foundation of Plaid America and the products so many people have been thanking us for bringing into the CA market under the SUBSTANCE and SKEWVILLE brands. . The two words? Compassionate and Capitalism. They hit different when you put them together. . Notions of conscious capitalism, B-corp designations and % of profit givebacks are familiar, lauded & unfortunately sometimes run into the ground by corporations that use them to wash their guilt away long after they are caught fucking something up—be it a human life, a neighborhood, or entire ecosystems. . Compassion is a new way in, and happens to be a word I keep close. . I define compassion as empathy sweetened by rage. . Without rage, there is no compassion. It takes being pushed to the brink to become a practitioner of compassion. Otherwise you just care. . Caring is base. Caring can be passive. . Compassion moves mountains. Compassion shifts constructs. Compassion gets it done when it seems impossible. . His point was that we had no better way to battle society’s ills than with the systems and tools we have at our disposal, namely capitalism. . I agreed; so what if the system has been used cavalierly by others. We can do it differently; we can do it with compassion. My co-founder, Simon Davies agreed too. The rest is living history with the goal of making it. Day in, day out. . I’ll never be able to thank James Baldwin for similar contributions to this moment in time where we have six skus across two brands allowing everyone (at least in CA) an opportunity to participate in our ethos — to vote with their wallets when possible — but I can thank present day leaders like Michael whose namesake album dropped to acclaim recently, and is the reason we met again this week. This time after his show at the Grammy Museum. What a blessing! Hi gang 👋👻! Meet Sam the CS skeleton, Sam owns renewals in his organization, and his boss Velicity Vampira is on him like a "suit on a skeleton" to get his 4th quarter renewal in 😞. Sam asks his boss about contract renewal terms. He has worked some "creepy math magic" 🪄 to get what he needs the contract to be renewed at, and he has a new TCV in his mind to negotiate toward. Vampira 🧛♀️ 🌙 looks at him like he is stupid and says, "the board won't accept if we lose this account, you better discount it and call it a day!" 💀 ☠️ Sam was frustrated, he made no bones about it!! After all, taking a hair cut/discount to keep a major account is just bad business. 📉✒️✂️ PRO-TIP-Vampira 🧛♀️🤦is a jerk..if you are in a place of power LISTEN👂to smart monsters that you hire. We really don't always know best as leaders, that is why team accountability matters. Ask any sales or marketing professional… Launching new products and building new territories is not easy. Over a year ago my husband, Dean Peaple , joined this company to launch a new division of window coverings. Through operations and production challenges, changes in leadership and the minimal marketing support common with ‘startups’ - my husband never gave up! I have watched him be tenacious and creative, using common sense, guerilla tactics, and teamwork- always finding a way. I know the road is long, - and I admire my husbands patience and perseverance.
