For many carmakers, the end of last year was defined by electric vehicle (EV) models that appeal. And while EV supply chains currently produce more carbon emissions than the supply chains of gas-powered vehicles, carmakers are expected to launch at least 24 all-new, all-battery-powered vehicles in the country this year, representing a nearly 50 percent increase in the plans to pump the brakes on making new EVs: Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen all trimmed output of electric models or walked back production goals in recent months.

Keeping the conversation going - what Brett S. asks here are the questions many dealers are asking. My LinkedIn feed is filled with "experts" claiming dealers are the main obstacle here to EV sales taking off. They're afraid of what EVs will do to service revenue, they don't want to make the capital, personnel, or training investment in selling EVs... Brett is one of several dealers I spent time with NADA. He, along with the others, own and run highly successful dealer groups (Brett is also a successful tech entrepreneur). They are constantly looking at ways to improve their dealership portfolios, determine which brands and automakers to invest in and partner with. They'll go all in selling EVs provided the consumer demand and return on on investment is there. It's a tired and lazy refrain that dealers don't want to sell EVs. They've seen too many OEM programs and too much industry hype for all sorts of things over the years for them to believe conventional wisdom. But dealers (like Brett) are willing to have honest conversations based on real data on how to sell EVs -- and which ones to sell. There is so much more to write on this topic...

Upcoming EVs-- many priced below $45,000-- represent a stark departure from launches of the past two years, when vehicles like the GMC Hummer EV were priced above $100,000. "In order to keep EV adoption rates going, now we've got to get the truly mainstream — not affluent and not early-adopter — buyer into EVs," Ed Kim of AutoPacific told Jack Walsworth. The cost gap is narrowing between EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles because of more affordable options like the Equinox. But automakers still have work to do.
