Happy start to the new week! I am in fine fettle and catching up on the new things emerging from discussions at ECCMID. One thing that caught my eye is the new terminology from WHO in respiratory particles! Document link https://lnkd.in/eyHA9Pyj This is yet another changing the terminology in the management of air in indoor spaces. One thing that I found interesting is the thought of "puffs of air" discussed by Cath Noakes and Martin Kiernan on their podcast. I have always said air moves thermally. It rises with warmth and will take time to drop down, or may move between areas if the particle weight is small, or less dense however you choose to look at it. This is the underpinning principle for airborne transmission, ventilation is an important defence against transmission in healthcare settings. Natural ventilation is not consistent enough to achieve dilution of the particles produced. Introducing air conditioning and fans will not only share airborne respiratory particles, but faecal particles in the air from a toilet as an example. This is not new science, we all see our breath in the winter, do we think it disappears in the summer? Nope.. Sorry! So this video makes sense and it needs to be understood in context. If we are in an area where there is high levels of infectious patients with respiratory borne illness, adult and paediatric, or we are doing things to generate a cough, intubation etc, these are the times we are illiciting a cough response, and moving those particles out into the air circulating in the space.
