🧤 Gloves? Check. 🔨 Shovels? Check. 🌿 Tarps? Check. 🌱 Expert ecologist? Check. The mission? To seek and destroy invasive plants while learning how to protect and nurture our natural surroundings. 🌲 Our very own Heather N., Production Coordinator at Frostbite, spearheaded the initiative by creating Invasive Plants vs. Frosties, a group dedicated to removing invasive plants in the woods of Discovery Place Conservation Area, surrounding EA Vancouver. To date, the team has successfully removed nearly 10,000 invasive plants from the local area. 🌿 💪 Read more about how the Frostbite team is preserving the local environment and setting a framework for others to follow 👉 https://bit.ly/3RRsUDr

“In the past, we would go to the worst places first, which is like sending in an ambulance when the land is already in need of life-support.” -Jeremy Maestas, a USDA-NRCS ecologist This is why we pioneered and now promote the conservation strategy called Defend the Core. Defend the Core focuses on preventative care for intact core areas and aims to grow the core from there. Learn more: https://buff.ly/42IiSbq

A really interesting lunchtime #webinar on the meaning of the 30 by 30 #conservation #commitment, co-hosted by the Ecological Restoration and Habitat Creation SIG and Marine and Coastal SIG of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). The amount of #marine area that #Ireland is responsible is absolutely incredible. Donal Griffin's takeaway message was that although excellent #progress has been made in designating Marine Protected Areas (#MPAs) in Ireland, it looks like there's still a long way to go and it's difficult to tell whether Ireland will meet the target. There also needs to be a focus on not just setting conservation objectives, but also on the quality of new and existing conservation objectives. Something that struck me during the webinar, and I'm furious with myself for not remembering who specifically mentioned it, was emphasis on how this target should be interpreted as an "at least" 30 by 30 conservation commitment. Conservation is a fickle business and it can be difficult to predict and monitor the progress and effectiveness of implemented measures. Aiming above the target means the target is far more likely to be truly met and it's a method that should be applied across the board. Thanks to all the speakers for their #insights! #CIEEMLunchtimeChats #CIEEMLunchtimeWebinar #30x30 #30by30 #atleast30by30 #atleast30x30 #conservationcommitment #ecology #ecologicalrestoration #environment

Join us on Thursday, 16 March at noon for a lunchtime Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) online event focussing on the 30 by 30 target (30% of our land and sea in protected areas by 2030)! We will be hosting speakers Cassie Rist (Wildlife and Countryside Link), Christian Christodoulou-Davies (NatureScot), and Donal Griffin (Fair Seas), who all bring their expertise to the table to discuss what 30 by 30 means for nature conservation in the UK and Ireland. Supporting landowners to rewild | Practical advice through Rewilding Network | Ecologist |Views are my own
We are missing a massive part of natural processes in Britain- the role of carcasses. Thanks to ARK Natuurontwikkeling for inviting me to the Circle of Life Symposium last month to learn about the brilliant work you are doing and how you are restoring the nutrient cycle in #rewilding projects. You can read my key takeaways in this blog
☠️ Did you know that carcasses can support an abundance of species, from the small to the mighty - providing food, minerals and shelter? 🦅 Inspired by her study trip to the Netherlands, where rewilding sites have special dispensation to leave carcasses and carrion in the landscape, Rewilding Manager Sara King explores the crucial role the 'cycle of life' plays in restoring ecosystems. In her latest blog she argues that it’s time we allowed this essential natural process to be a part of #rewilding in Britain too. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dX3XZ9yX

🐸 Let's protect the frogs 🐸 Frogs and other amphibians are an important part of our ecosystems, but their habitats are threatened by urban development. To protect the frogs, we make frog inventories to find out where they live and create new homes for them. SCALGO Live lets you find the frogs. 🐸 We asked Frederik Engdahl, a water ecologist in Ekologigruppen AB, to talk about how he prepares frog inventories. Here's a simple graphic I made that details how to recognize unethical primate media. For the sake of our primate friends- only sanctuaries, rehabilitation centers, conservation projects, and accredited zoos should be supported. 🐒

🌊 Calling all Australian Coastal Landholders! We are excited to invite you to participate in a nation-wide survey that could shape the future of coastal wetland restoration in Australia. Many coastal wetlands - such as mangroves and saltmarshes occur on private properties, meaning that landholders can play a critical role in the conservation and restoration of these ecosystems. As part of understanding wetland restoration opportunities in Australia, the BlueCarbonLab is leading research to understand Australian landholders’ readiness to engage in coastal wetland restoration. Insights from this study will be used to inform practice and policy measures (e.g., funding or incentive-schemes) to support landholder engagement in coastal wetland restoration. 🔗 Share your insights in the survey here: https://lnkd.in/gd3Se9Qn
