I am approaching my 5th anniversary as an adjunct instructor in a local university, teaching international relations and political science. This note is to encourage anybody that has the time and/or capability to seek opportunities to get involved in higher education. To me, it is rewarding, invigorating, and challenging. Even if you do not have the chance to teach, there are numerous ways you can be involved and have an influence. These include being a mentor, organizational sponsor to an academic department, supporter to an athlete or team, guest lecturer, or club advisor. Remember that many undergraduates are trying to “figure things out,” and any practical experience you can offer will be well received. If you don’t have any contacts at a local university, consider researching a particular department or organization and then reaching out to the respective leader, my sense is the university will appreciate this. Albert Einstein said it best: “The value of a college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think.” I believe many more of us can contribute to this vision.   

THE JOURNEY OF SCHOLARS COPIED FROM CHEVENING AWARD (FCDO) 'Rejection is a redirection.' Not all our Chevening Scholars were successful applicants first time around. Lots of them persevered through initial rejections to show that they were truly determined to be a Chevener, a leader of tomorrow. Scholar Roshinee Mookaiah reflects on her experience: 'I write this reflection at the end of my first term at LSE as a Master’s student. This dream has been years in the making - five years of preparations and three years of active applications + rejections. And now in hindsight I can see how right now is the perfect time for me to be pursuing my Masters, which is only made possible because I was rejected from this opportunity the years before. Because I was rejected in the prior years for both my uni and scholarship applications, I continued working in my home country and had the chance to pursue very unique and highly impactful advocacy work in my community. I gained rich experiences, network and learnings during those years which now translates into such useful and relevant contexts for what I am studying this year in my university. I am a stronger student and scholar because of it. The rejections also offered me a chance to dig deeper and explore other opportunities that were better suited for my interest. In my first two years, I applied for a MSc in Political Communication but during the past two years when I was rejected, I had a chance to pivot and refine my expertise in the Malaysian human rights and political sector instead. This led to a stronger, unique application and eventually a successful entry to my current MSc in Human Rights and Politics at LSE. Rejections are indeed painful but looking at it from a frame of redirection has been useful for me, and I hope it will be for you too - specifically to help you process the initial disappointment and to then be open to alternative opportunities in front of you. Rejections don’t mean never ever, maybe just not now - and that’s okay too! I have already had the chance to thank many of you personally, but I wanted to share that I feel deeply honored to be named the 2024 Elliott School of International Affairs Distinguished Scholar, awarded to the school’s top graduating senior based on academic achievement, independent research, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities, and honors received. Witnessing an overflowing stream of global change these past four years, few concepts have felt as close to home as impermanence. At the Elliott School, I have learned to see two sides of inconstancy. The first side is negative: crisis, instability, and volatility dominate many corners of the world today, bringing pain and suffering to many. The other side, however, is positive: advancement, transformation, and evolution allow us to see past our faults and aspire to a more just world. Having learned from the broad network of brilliant scholars, practitioners, and students Elliott convenes, I feel more ready to face the inevitability of change—both the hazard of instability and the hope of progress. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to study at Elliott and GW more broadly, and I look forward to putting my education to good use. Finally, I want to express my immense gratitude to the family, friends, faculty, and mentors who have inspired, supported, and challenged me along the way, and I will do my best to pay it forward in the coming years.
