Did you ever navigate to a directory in search of some files and found the folder packed with a half-million files? Of course, all you want is to find the sales October sales contacts made over the last five years. Fear not for the solution to this conundrum is at hand. It’s called “globbing” and it means “to group.” More specifically, it shows groups of results after having filtered through all of the files for ones that meet search criteria. In Windows, globbing is a pretty limited exercise with just two wildcards and small set of characters to search on. But in Linux, globbing is a much capable and powerful and granular tool. In Linux, we can glob in every way that Windows can, plus search for lists, ranges and other criteria. It’s easy to learn and works in both the command line and in graphical file explorers such as Nautilus. Let’s make this even more fun. Further down this post is a link to our Discord server.
