With an outstanding international ranking of 295th in life and medical sciences among Hungarian Universities, Semmelweis University has proven itself as a leader in academia. Notably, the university excels in anatomy and psychology, securing a position among the top 100 higher education institutions (51-100) in the Quacquarelli Symmonds (QS) World University Rankings. As a key partner in the NeoVasculoStop project, Semmelweis University undertakes to examine the efficiency of the developed compounds in cell based VEGFR2-reporter system that allows for the screening of a larger number of molecules at the same time and in the more physiologic in vitro angiogenesis (so called "tube formation") assay. For the latter, Semmelweis University uses HRMEC (human retinal microvascular endothelial cells) that can directly unravel the anti-angiogenic properties of the compounds being developped. Moreover, Semmelweis University uses laboratory animals with induced diabetes to directly test how efficiently the best two compounds could heal diabetic retinopathy, a devastating condition that frequently leads to complete blindness and involves retinal neovascularization. Last, but not least, it is also assigned to Semmelweis University to test the potential toxicity of the compounds on post mortem human retinal explant cultures. At Semmelweis, Dr. Krisztián Kovács coordinates the implementation of NeoVasculoStop. Dr Kovács has obtained his PhD in Switzerland and currently leads the Translational Retina Research Group as a scientific advisor at the Institute of Translational Medicine established by Prof. Dr. Zoltán Benyó. To recruit the highest amount of outstanding know-how, two further experts from two further institutes participate in NeoVasculoStop from Semmelweis: The Department of Anatomy Histology and Embryology, where the Retina Laboratory lead by Dr. Arnold Szabó will assess the toxicity of the compounds under development on post mortem human retinae. Furthermore, the Second Department of Pathology will contribute to the histological processing of the relevant samples relying on the outstanding expertise of Dr András Budai. The specific knowledge and skills brought by Semmelweis University's renowned departments greatly contribute to the success of the NeoVasculoStop project. In a first for Virginia Tech, M.D./Ph.D. Degree Program student Katelyn Stebbins has received a The National Institutes of Health Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award F30 award for her neurobiology research. Stebbins’ research focuses on the brain’s important yet poorly understood visual processing center: the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus (vLGN) 🧠👁️ “The more we learn about this brain region, the more remains left to discover. My goal is to fill in those gaps so we can identify precise cells, understand their developmental changes and molecular characteristics. Congratulations to Ying Liao on defending his doctoral dissertation in biomedical imaging and technology yesterday at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Liao’s dissertation is titled “Mapping Tissue Microstructure in Human White Matter with Diffusion MRI.” Diffusion MRI—a technique that tracks the naturally random motion of water molecules—has long been known to be sensitive to microscopic features of the brain’s white matter, where densely arranged hydrophobic structures restrict water diffusion. However, scientists are still working on increasing diffusion MRI’s specificity to microscopic features of neural tissue. Dr. Liao’s research advances the field by examining a biophysical framework called the standard model of diffusion MRI—developed by our center’s researchers at NYU Langone Health—with machine learning methods, computer simulations, and so-called “orthogonal” measurements from complementary sources in order to improve the specificity of parameters estimated from diffusion MRI. In one research project published recently in the journal Imaging Neuroscience Dr. Liao and colleagues “demonstrate that using a machine learning-based estimator, our biophysical model captures the morphological changes of axons in early development, acute ischemia, and multiple sclerosis.” Investigations like these bring diffusion MRI closer to fulfilling its potential to provide new clinical biomarkers of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders and help scientists better understand how the brain changes over a lifetime. Dr. Liao’s dissertation was advised by Els Fieremans and Dmitry Novikov, associate professors of radiology at NYU Langone Health and scientists at our imaging research center. Congratulations to Sarah Shaykevich on defending her doctoral dissertation yesterday at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Shaykevich's dissertation, developed in the course of her studies in our biomedical imaging and technology PhD training program, advances the use of optoacoustic tomography, an imaging technique in which light beamed at tissue generates heat and creates changes in pressure that are detectable as sound waves. This phenomenon, known as the optoacoustic effect, produces ultrasonic data that can be reconstructed as three-dimensional images. Brain imaging methods tend to offer either global, macroscopic perspectives or hyperlocal, microscopic views of neural tissues. The macroscopic methods can be noninvasive but don’t provide a very detailed look at cellular structures. The microscopic techniques deliver highly detailed views but only of small, ex-vivo tissue samples. Optoacoustic tomography has the potential to visualize brain structures and processes at an intermediate scale, helping neuroscientists' image and investigate a greater range of neural phenomena. Dr. Shaykevich’s PhD research focused on developing methods for multimodal functional optoacoustic fluorescence imaging of the mouse brain. In one new application, she and colleagues implemented optoacoustic tomography to visualize the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and the glymphatic system, which clears away the brain’s metabolic waste. The dissertation was advised by Shy Shoham, PhD, professor of neuroscience and physiology, and ophthalmology, at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and co-director of the Tech4Health institute at NYU Langone Health.
