(1/8) As we approach the end of 2023, I wanted to spend some time sharing gratitude for the incredible guest speakers who joined my class throughout the fall 2023 semester. Each person shared incredible stories about their personal and professional journeys, and my students and I gleaned many insights from their visits. Lindsay Brown, Program Manager, Workforce Opportunities, Society of St. Vincent de Paul "I felt that Lindsay's passion for her work radiated from her body language and speech. I found this to be super inspiring because she spoke of such an intense issue but with so much appreciation for the work and continued efforts of SVdP. As a graduating senior, it is nice to hear people that love their job so much and feel that their work is so enriching, that it is hard for them to stop. I appreciated that she loved what she did so much that it inspired her to continue to develop and be brave by taking on new challenges." "I liked Lindsay's slide about the steps that SVdP goes through when engaging in cross-sector collaboration. It helped me to realize the complexity and time involved in forming cross-sector connections." "I wanted to know how I could get involved with my passions in recovery, mental health, and substance abuse. I asked my question to Lindsay later on in the presentation, and am so happy to hear about possible opportunities to do this!" 🌟✨ Inspiring youth spotlight for Mental Health Awareness Week! A shining example of young entrepreneurship and mental health advocacy!👏 Two years ago, at just fifteen years old, Asia represented CTS College and Trinidad and Tobago, winning the prestigious title of Future Entrepreneur of the Year on an international stage! Her innovative business idea? A dance studio with classes specifically designed to promote social engagement among children and teens, promoting both mental and physical wellbeing. The judges were highly impressed by Asia's enthusiasm for her business idea combined with a realistic business plan. Judge Marc Ortman, chair of the Global Entrepreneurs Network UK, said, "Asia has a clear idea for her business and a realistic understanding of what it will take to set it up and deliver it. Her passion and belief in her start-up is inspiring." These sentiments were shared by the other judges, Philip Salter, Founder of The Entrepreneurs Network, and Emrys Green, Chair, Institute of Leadership and Management, with Lesley Li, CEO & co-founder of Berlin-based FinTech company U Impact, adding, "I'm impressed by Asia's ability to turn her passion into a viable business that could potentially improve the society she's living in." This picture is from a tree that just stopped me in my tracks while wandering through Inverness, Scotland this Spring. It was clearly connected to the other trees, but that didn't stop it from standing out. In fact, on it's own, it might not have been as remarkable. I have been on a semi-sabbatical. For the past 11 months, I was fortunate to create space for consulting, collaborating, co-designing with amazing colleagues and friends and to reimagine my contribution to the work I care about: making education and the pathway into work more accessible and inclusive to everyone. This time to refocus my energy has allowed me to connect with people I love. My kids, who still want to spend time with me; my mom, who never says no to a lunch date; my sister, who is always will to work in the garden with me; my friends, who keep me sane; and my husband Shawn Mathie who is my partner in all things. It also reinforced my belief that real and true human connection matters. It let me (re)connect with people that came to me through work but have become part of my life in ways that are hard to measure. This time to refocus my energy also let me choose new work. Brainstorming with Victoria Shire; partnering with Brittany Brady, and Ricardo Romanillos, for the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity on a project that I have been itching to do for years (and so much more to come); working with Andy Hepburn and Stephanie Reisner and the GPS Education Partners team to learn, co-design, and wade through the sticky world of building career pathways partnerships. And because this was a year to say yes to everything, I started a project with National Louis University to reimagine the Bachelor’s Degree and the undergraduate experience. I'm glad to share that I have joined this amazing team of social entrepreneurs and innovators as the new Executive Director for Undergraduate Innovation and LE3, a new model for bridging education and work. Those connections continue to grow Eddie Phillips Jr., Ed.D. Andi Koritari Nivine Megahed Thackston Lundy and so many more.

At 2+ months into my time as an Axford Fellow in New Zealand (https://lnkd.in/gcXyA76N), I'm inspired by the Kiwi sleeves-rolled-up, "give it a go" attitude toward problem solving and humbled by what's challenging across government service delivery everywhere. I'm re-reading my highlights from Jennifer Pahlka's Recoding America (https://lnkd.in/gxaqTr-N) including this fave: "When services respect our time, minimize intrusion, use language we understand, and don't make us feel stupid, that deeply broken relationship with government can start to mend." It's easy to recall the opposite experience and we in government have a daily opportunity shape trust-enhancing service for our residents. The more people I meet similarly aiming to do so here and at home, the more possible it seems at scale. Can't recommend reading this book and doing this work enough. Happy New Year! 2024 holds promise and potential for positive change and transformation everywhere I look. May the year bring us closer to our better selves and each other! In the spirit of positive changes, I would like to share some changes in my life that are unfolding this year. To start, I have released my first book! It is a book of poetry title, Ohigan. Ohigan is a Japanese tradition honoring life’s transformations, and means, ‘the other shore.’ I had the honor to work on this project with the very talented artist, adventurer, climber, Yagmur Kuzay. Doing something new can be nerve wracking. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and sows little seeds of doubt about your ability to succeed and whether it's better to just stay in your lane. But it can also be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding when you push through that fear and open yourself up to change and new opportunities. This is partly a summary of some of the themes covered by our excellent guest speaker, University of Strathclyde's Meryl Levington BA MA FRSA at today's first "Empowering Female Entrepreneurs to Lead" workshop. But it also covers how the Empowering You team have felt over the past few months as we developed this new initiative and prepared to meet our first cohort. This was a totally new community and audience for us and the questions and potential challenges seemed to be everywhere. How do we engage with them? Is the offering what the market is looking for? Will we be accepted? Will anyone even show up on the day? And the outcome? We've brought together a group of some of the most inspiring, energised and energising female founders and entrepreneurs from across Scotland and they've been an absolute pleasure to work with. We can't wait to see what the next few months holds. You're in the driving seat and your lane is wherever you choose to go.
