It's Worse Than They Said: SVB 2024 DTC Report Silicon Valley Bank’s 2024 Direct-to-Consumer Report presentation tried very hard to gild bad news in silver linings. There was very little positive to be found in the hard data presented. The discussion panel tried their best to say all is not doomed. And while I won’t say the industry is doomed, it is facing some pretty big challenges right now. The gilding came in the form of data that shows sales volume is down for the under-$20 SRP wine category, but sales dollars are up for more expensive wines. Only one panelist pointed out that price increases were likely a major driver for that positive data. Enthusiasts are falling under the spell of the “Green Fairy,” another name for absinthe, leading to an astonishing 1,175% surge in sales of absinthe fountains last month! Absinthe fountains are elegant bowls filled with cold water, equipped with multiple taps to dilute absinthe to individual tastes. Although the term ‘absinthe fountain’ typically doesn't attract much attention, Google Trends has marked it as a 'breakout' term, indicating a surge in search popularity by over 5,000%. This spike suggests that the fascination with absinthe fountains is only beginning. Prospective buyers are likely searching for absinthe mixed drink recipes, fountain maintenance tips, and where to find replacement parts, supplies, and accessories during this trend.

Brands and retailers leave a crazy amount of money on the table by running untested vanilla promotions. I recently bought wine for our family Christmas. The store was running its standard, year-long promo: buy 12 bottles of wine and get one free. Let's break down what's good about this promotion and how it could improve. I love the structure of this promotion because it incentivizes higher-order values by tying the reward to a specific purchase volume. According to the internet, liquor store markups on wine are nearly 100%. For simplicity, assume I bought $10 bottles, meaning the store earned a $5 margin on each bottle. When I entered the store, I planned to buy ten bottles. A sign in the store reminded me that I could get a free bottle if I bought twelve instead, and that's what I did. Success, right? Not so fast. I bought two extra bottles, netting the store an additional $5. That's great. But... I would have purchased an additional bottle to earn the reward. That's $5 left on the table. What's more, some other customers planned to buy twelve plus bottles without the promo but received the same reward. Another group of customers only buys a few bottles at a time, and setting the threshold to receive the reward at twelve bottles excludes this group from the promotion. The retailer may entice this group to increase their order size to six bottles, for example, if they get the seventh at 50% off. Here in lies the problem. The promo isn't personalized to each customer, and the cost is $$$ left on the table. As a retailer, you can increase the value of your promotions by optimizing: A. What reward should be given to the customers (e.g., a free bottle of wine, 10% off, etc.) B. For what action (e.g., buy 12 bottles, place an order over $100, etc.) C. Which group of customers get A and B For a mom-and-pop liquor store, personalized promos are impractical. However, for eComm retailers, they are not. All you need is first-party data to build smart segments and the desire to make your business more data-driven.
