A public comment period concludes April 18 on Washington State Department of Transportation proposals to increase Amtrak Cascades service over the next 20 years to as many as 16 daily round trips between Seattle and Portland, and six between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, reported Trains. "The 46-page Preliminary Service Development Plan for the Cascades offers five different scenarios to increase service from the baseline of two Seattle-Vancouver and six Seattle-Portland round trips. Variants include the number of daily trains; bus service between Bellingham, Wash., and Vancouver for some trips; some limited-stop or express trains; and infrastructure upgrades that would allow top speeds of 90 mph. Where can rail fit into this? Certainly axle restrictions are not necessarily a conflict when it comes to rail. There maybe some other clearance, or loading guage restrictions to consider, perhaps access points as well. However moving these dimensional loads via rail, wouldn’t encounter such hinderances, as rail RoW is privately operated.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), data from the University of Maryland indicates substantial impacts on truck trips, particularly affecting routes diverted through key arteries such as the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (Interstate 895), the Fort McHenry Tunnel (Interstate 95), and the western side of the Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695). Nicole Katsikides, a transportation specialist at FMCSA, highlighted the importance of monitoring these roadways for reliability amidst heightened variability in travel times. She emphasized the concern among truck drivers regarding route planning, as fluctuating travel times directly impact on-time deliveries and operational efficiency.
