Me and the annual conference? We're like old pals, the kind that you sometimes bicker with but can't imagine life without. It's a kind of love-hate relationship. I love the power it holds—the kind that brings together folks from different corners, creating connections that feel like destiny. As our CEO, Chris French, puts it, it's that chance to "realise you're part of something bigger." One thing I can't get enough of is the passion and creativity within our Trust. The conference isn't a static creature; it's a dynamic beast that evolves yearly. No handcuffs of 'this is how we do it.' Claire Pender and I have the freedom to mould and reshape it based on the Trust's needs. And let's talk about the people! Meeting minds from education and beyond is like a shot of inspiration. Last year, we had about 20 external speakers, including some education giants. This year, I get to collaborate with the incredible Danae Wellington—Sheffield's Poet Laureate. If I could, I'd just sit, listen, and soak in her brilliance all day long. As for the hate part? Well, hate might be a strong word. Sure, the conference has been a three-month work-life devourer, but when I step back and reflect, it's worth every bit of worry and stress. And, let's face it, with event planning, the devil is in the detail! So here's to the conference rollercoaster beginning, I better strap myself in!

Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of where you are in your training or career!  Join us May 13th at 7:30pm at Prova Restaurant at the Delta Hotel for our Pre-Conference Meet and Greet!    RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gJbdsF-P Dragon's Den Event: CAHSPR's Student Working Group (SWG) is taking it up a notch this year with a new funding opportunity for trainees taking place right at the annual CAHSPR conference!   WHAT IS GOING ON? The SWG is hosting a Dragons’ Den competition and awarding the top team with a $1,000 grant to conduct a small innovative project that fits the theme: informing accessible and equitable health systems in Canada. SIX teams will compete for the prize.    WHO CAN GET INVOLVED? Teams can have up to a maximum of TWO trainees and ONE mentor. Trainees include: current graduate students, postdocs, early career researchers, and recent graduates outside academia (e.g., those who have graduated and taken up non-academic roles within the last five years). Mentors include: established researchers, leaders in non-academic positions (e.g., government, non-profit, corporate) related to health services and policy. WHEN IS THIS GOING ON? The competition will take place on May 14th from 3:30-4:45pm in-person at the CAHSPR conference. The trainee(s) MUST be available in-person at the conference to present. Mentors are encouraged to participate in-person but this is optional.   PRESENTATIONS AND JUDGING: Presentations will be 3-minute pitches followed by up to 5 minutes of questions. At least 2 of the 3 minutes must be presented by the trainee(s) rather than the mentor. Pitches will be judged by three leaders in research and policy: Dr. Bryan Stirling Dr. Meredith Vanstone Dr. Jennifer Zelmer The average of judges' scores will be used to select the top team, who will win $1000 to put toward bringing their project to life.   I'M INTERESTED! Please fill out the expression-of-interest form availablein the caption below by May 1, 2024. Proposals will be blind reviewed by members of the CAHSPR SWG and the six selected teams will be contacted via email by May 6, 2024.     For any question at all - reach out to the [email protected].

I told myself that I wasn’t good at networking. I told myself that networking is meant for extrovert. I told myself perhaps when I am more successful, I can network more effectively. Basically, these are excuses. I am concerned about what to say or what to do. I am concerned about being alone. I am concerned about being odd. Recently I had the privilege of attending the NUS CDE Alumni Relation Events, connecting with fellow alumni and faculty. Amidst the enriching discussions and networking, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey. How was it that I am now much better at networking? I just go to such event without any agenda (stress reliever) I just go to such event with an open mind to meet people (curiosity) I just go to such event to have a conversation (just a simple human-human talk) In the end, surprisingly, I had name cards of 3 distinguished Professional Engineer, doing well in their own field. It started as simple genuine questions: “How did you get to know of this event?” “How many times have you attended such events?” “What are you working on?” From there, it spirals into different conversations.
