GCT Bayonne and GCT New York terminals are two of the most significant (but expensive to access) terminals in the NY/NJ area. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd agree on joint operational cooperation Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd) and Maersk A/S, an AP Moller company - Maersk (Maersk) have reached an agreement for a new, long-term operational collaboration called “Gemini Cooperation”, which will start in February 2025 . The aim is to create a flexible and interconnected service network in maritime transport with industry-leading reliability. “Working with Maersk will help further increase the quality we offer our customers. “In addition, we will benefit from improvements in efficiency in our operations and joint efforts to further accelerate the decarbonization of our industry,” says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. The new cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk will include a fleet pool of around 290 ships with a combined capacity of 3.4 million standard containers (TEU); Maersk will provide 60% of this and Hapag-Lloyd 40%. “We are very pleased about the cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd, because the company is an ideal shipping partner on our strategic journey. Through this collaboration, we offer our customers a flexible maritime transport network that raises the bar for reliability in our industry. The collaboration will strengthen our integrated logistics offering while meeting the needs of our customers,” said Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk. As part of the agreement, the two companies have set an ambitious goal of achieving schedule reliability of over 90% once the network is fully deployed. In addition to improved service quality, customers will also benefit from improved transit times in many key port-to-port corridors and access to some of the best-connected maritime hubs in the world. Both companies are intensively driving forward the decarbonization of their fleets and have set themselves the most ambitious decarbonization goals in the industry: Maersk wants to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and Hapag-Lloyd by 2045. As part of the decision to pursue this collaboration, Hapag-Lloyd will leave THE Alliance in January 2025. In January 2023, Maersk and MSC announced that the 2M alliance would end in January 2025. During 2024, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will carefully plan the transition from their current alliances to the new operational collaboration. At the same time, services for customers will continue under existing agreements.
